| Adeline Pierce has been dating Mic Cafferty for years but it’s the 1920s and she’s not ready to marry him yet. He has quite a temper. She has a good job. It just doesn’t feel right. When the family is told seven year old Jimmy needs to move to a different climate to heal his ailing body there seems to be no way to get the money they need. William Denning offers to give them the money but the price is high-Adeline‘s hand in marriage. He’s disfigured from the war and wants an heir. Adeline decides she’s willing to strike the bargain but Mic isn’t ready to let her go no matter what he has to do.
Delia DeLeest pens a love story sure to capture the reader’s heart. As we learn more about Will and are able to contrast him with Mic it should be obvious which of the two is the better man. Will may be scarred on the outside but Mic becomes nastier and nastier showing his true colors. Adeline is a woman with a heart of gold and becomes even more likeable as the story unfolds. It makes us wonder what we would do under similar circumstances. Secondary characters like the youngsters in Adeline’s family and Mrs. Greenway, Will’s housekeeper, are priceless additions to the story. There are some excellent pieces of historical information that bring the times alive. Most of us may not be old enough to remember the days of operator assisted calls but Adeline’s job as one such operator is well done. As is reference to the way people were putting all their money into the stock market in the years before the crash while Will is avoiding putting all his eggs in one basket. This is a great read mixing a wonderful love story with suspense as Mic pulls out all the stops to win Adeline back when she‘s falling in love with Will.
