| Colin is tired of life and is just about to end it. His attempts at suicide are about as half-hearted as the events of his life. He tries slitting his wrists and that is ineffective, then he determines to jump off his balcony railing. That might have worked, but then the vampire shot by an arrow knocks into him. Rowland is escaping from a clutch of vampire-hunters, and at the last moment is struck in the chest by an arrow as he leaps from the roof of Colin’s building. He realizes immediately that Colin is a mortal with a death wish, and offers to fulfill it just as soon as Colin pulls the arrow loose; but the alcohol and barbiturates Colin had consumed in preparing to jump make him too weak to respond. He’s feeling enough physical response to notice how the vampire is turning him on, and chuckles at the idea that his potential first encounter with another male is at the verge of his death.
Laura Baumbach delivers a happily-ever-after hopeful Halloween entry, which would be appropriate for any time of year. Any reader can empathize with the virginal, overly protected and sheltered Colin; and Rowland is a very sexy and hunky predator. Once again she delivers sizzling m/m intimacy with a heartwarming love story entwined with it.
