Devon McCallister, from Redemption, Colorado, was taking a shortcut home during a snow storm; he came upon a wreck in which Kyle Strickland died and his wife, Chloe, barely survived. Before he died, Kyle insisted Devon promise to take care of Chloe. Later, while at the hospital, they found out Chloe was pregnant. Devon was a rich little playboy who had lots of girlfriends, but no serious relationships. His rapport with his father was so bad that Devon seemed to try to prove him irresponsible.

Chloe was so much in love with her late husband that it seemed as if she would never be able to live and love again. The more Devon was around her, the more aware he was of how much he was falling in love with her. Devon's assistant at his lumber company, Jessie was scheduled to marry the parson in a few weeks; she desperately needed help in the office. She also was moving out of her home when she married. This provided Chloe a job and a place to live. Devon kept in constant touch with Chloe because he took his promise to Kyle very seriously.

Jessie and her fiancé Sam were also very close to Chloe. Jessie felt like she was a surrogate mother to both Chloe and Devon. Chloe started reading her Bible and going to church with Jessie and accepted the presence of the Lord in her life. Devon could not understand the necessity of such a commitment and, although he attended church with them, he refused to make such a vow.

Throughout this book, Devon and Chloe gave and received mixed signals from each other. Their friendship flourished, and then faltered. They were happy, busy and thrilled with life, but then one of them would feel too vulnerable and they would disagree with something the other did. To an outsider (the reader) it was so obvious that they were meant to be together; however, they were never completely honest with each other.

I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it wholeheartedly!
