|This is the fourth story in the Shifting Crossroads Series by Zenina Masters. You don't have to read the other three first... but I actually do recommend it so you can understand the Crossroads.
This story begins with Mak getting ready to go to his agent who will magically get him to the Crossroads. Mak is the easy version of the man's name, Enker Thosos Makiel Norwin. Sigh, I'd go by Mak too. Oh, and Mak isn't just some guy, he's a unicorn! Lucky for us Ms. Masters breaks all those unicorn stereotypes when she introduces him. He really wants a mate and is hoping the Crossroads will be able to supply one, one with cookies. Enter Dira. Actually she doesn't have to have anyone send her, she lives there and runs the Open Heart Bed and Breakfast and is also one of the founders of the magical area. We never found out in the first three books what kind of magical beast she is so I was excited when I saw she would be our heroine in this one.
Dira loves to bake and always greets her guests with cookies or some other baked goods. Turns out our boy Mak is kind of addicted to sugar so when he arrives to meet the proprietor and finds a curvaceous woman with a plate of cookies he's a goner. He can feel her power, almost immediately knows she's the one for him and wants to know her creature. Dira plays hard to get with that answer and it's cute what he has to go through to discover she's a dragon. Since the description of the novella says she's a dragon I feel safe saying that in this review. I enjoyed how these two mythical animals played around with guessing games while either fighting their attraction to each other or finally giving in.
Ok, bottom line is this. Dira and Mak are very rare magical creatures and they also have a helluva chemistry together. I have read all four of the Shifting Crossroads stories and was very much looking forward to reading this one. When I finished the story, I was smiling and totally thought it was sweet. I just had a moment or two of feeling there was something missing. I loved how Dira is really an ancient dragon, she's been around for a long time. When she gets together with Mak, she's also our cougar seeing as she's so much older than he. This really is worth the read, especially within the series!
