| John O’Bannon is a semi retired Chicago detective settled in Vicksburg Mississippi. He gets embroiled with Jerri Lynn who uses strange dialogue in a sexual interlude to try to convince him to kill her husband. The next day the judge, her husband, hires him to find out who raped and beat his wife.
This story had me shaking my head a lot at some of the dialogue and scenarios the author painted. John’s character initially isn’t very impressive. Before he shows me he has some potential as a detective, I’m thinking he’s just a testosterone filled guy. Jeri Lynn is portrayed as a greedy nymphomaniac which she lives up to well. An intriguing character is Hushi Humma, a Choctaw Indian who cares for the judge’s horses. The telling of this tale seemed to move so slowly at times that I had to really work to keep reading it. As John started to fall in love, open up to Hushi, and solve the mystery, it got better. The pace and the action picked up. The ending was really quite well done. I wish the rest of this novel could have held my interest as well as the ending did.
