| Marcus is a Roman, and while his stepmother is from a magical people and he loves her dearly, he want’s nothing else to do with magic. When he meets his friends sister for the first time, she turns from a wolf into a beautiful girl, and while it should have sent him running from her, he’s wanted her ever since. He’s determined to have nothing else to do with her, but she just won’t leave his mind or his dreams.
Gwen knows she’s always been a disappointment to everyone in her life. She’s a wild child, and wants to go her own way but is trapped in Avalon as its destined guardian. She uses “Wild Magic” even though it’s been forbidden, but its magic is starting to take her over against her will. When she meets Marcus she knows that he’s the one, but is sure he would never want to have her. Even if he could, Avalon needs her and she could never leave… When I started this story I hadn’t read the Grail King, which is the first in the series. I actually picked it up because I really loved her writing for the Immortals: The Awakening. I’m so glad I did, because I absolutely loved this story, and now I’m definitely going back and reading the first one. Not because I think I need to read it in order to understand anything in the story, I just want to get more of Joy Nash’s brilliant writing. The characters are multifaceted and wonderful; I felt that I really got to know both of them and rooted for them all the way. Gwen is tortured by her inability to measure up to everyone’s expectations… what I liked about that was that the expectations were HUGE, not a small thing like being pretty enough. She was expected to be the guardian of her people and wield her power to protect them, yet she really wants nothing more than to be free. Her control over her “wild magic” was tenuous at best, and slowly beginning to take her over. Marcus didn’t really want to get involved, but once she was with him nothing else mattered. He had his own demons to struggle with, and between the two of them I found myself reading into the night to find out what happened next. Deep Magic is one of those extraordinary stories that will take hold of you and not let you go until the end of the book. Even then you’ll want more!
