Helios is determined to free his people from the slavery they’ve endured over the years. Humans had made them genetically superior, yet dependent upon the concoction that they gave them in order to live. In other words, perfect slaves to the mines and other jobs that no one wants to do. There’s a company that has made an antidote for their illness, and he’s determined to get it. In order to do that, he has to capture the woman that’s in charge and get her to break into the lab to get it. He will not allow himself to fail, even if the woman turns out to be more than he bargained for.

Helios seems oddly innocent at times for all the trauma he’s went through, which I thought made him an engaging character. Dawn is a tough woman who usually doesn’t back down at all, but finds herself acting differently with Helios, almost as if her emotions were finally waking up. I thought it was a great book, and one of the things that I found amazing is that I really liked Helios, even though he was undoubtedly a violent man who could care less who he killed along the way. He unexpectedly found himself barely hanging on to his sanity after he met Dawn, and when she was out of his reach he turned into a raging beast. He only seemed to calm when he reached her. He seemed bewildered by it, which I think is what makes him so appealing, the vulnerability he shows even when he’s being destructive. DamNATION is a gritty, fast paced story that really captured my attention and wouldn’t let go until I was done.
