| Luc L’villebois had been imprisoned for almost 5 years until his release and return to his home and wife, Genevieve, the daughter of Etienne, Duke of Orleans. They had secretly wed before Luc was sent to fight. His return was not appreciated, and Luc had to flee for his life. He did, however, find that his wife had run away from her father and that she had a son, Jacque.
Luc was traveling with one woman (purchased as a maid for his wife) and two men. They had been riding in the rain for hours and were cold, hungry and very tired. The group found a rundown, abandoned abbey and stayed the night; they searched for the owner to request approval to restore the place and make a home there. The Duke of Taillebourg allowed his request and stated that he and his family would come to visit at Christmastime. He supplied Luc with some of his prisoners as workers. They were imprisoned for unpaid taxes and had various skills. The Duke also gave them enough basic supplies to help with the initial occupancy. This book was so sweet and so full of disappointment which eventually (of course) turned around. Luc’s search for his wife and child were frustrating and, in addition to their missing status, there was the father to contend with. This book was really enjoyable and I would recommend that you read anything Ms. Mueller writes.
