| Megan Montgomery doesn’t want to leave New York to live in some strange manor house in a small town in England but her dad has accepted a job transfer so what she wants doesn’t matter. Starting in a British school isn’t any fun; everyone treats her like being from America makes her stupid or lazy. Megan meets three girls who will at least talk to her but it turns out they are more interested in the strange tales about the house she lives in. Megan invites the girls over for a slumber party to check out the house and the rumors themselves and the real adventure begins.
I really enjoyed this story. It reminds me of a teenage version of the Magic Tree House books with a twist of Indian Jones thrown in for excitement. Megan is the main character and a natural leader when the book gets to the adventure. I felt a little sorry for her in the beginning but not enough to excuse her bratty behavior towards her father. Luckily, Megan gets her act together and turns out to be a wonderfully, likable, bright teenager. At first the three British girls seem to only be interested in Megan for the wrong reasons but as the story progresses so does their relationship. The four girls first discover a clue that leads them to a mysterious book that draws them into another dimension where they must find an ancient artifact to get back home. Then the girls must know a lot about Greek Mythology to solve some of the puzzling clues they are given and to succeed in their quest. If you want to try solve the puzzles with the girls you might want to brush up on your mythology but you can also just read along as the girls figure out the clues. There are adventures, mysterious people, magic, danger, and even a lesson on the value of friendship running through the story. This book is appropriate for young teens to adults of all ages. A few of the task might be a little scary for a younger reader and it is better if you are familiar with Greek Mythology. The tale for The Crown of Zeus winds up in this story but it is obvious this is the first of a series where there will be other adventures seeking other ancient artifacts. I’m looking forward to the next book!
