| Blue has everything he could want in his relationship with Derek but realizes that he needs to pursue a few personal goals to be completely fulfilled. One of these is getting his GED. It is while Blue is attending GED classes that he runs into Cameron Carter, the boy that tormented and bullied him all through high school but things are different now. Cameron has changed and is seeking to make things right. Blue is torn between the two and doesn’t know what to do, stay with Derek, go with Cameron, or figure out a way that he can have them both.
Close to Me is the second book in Katrina Strauss’ Blue Ruin series. In Close to me we find that the relationship between Derek and Blue has shifted more from the traditional Yaoi style romance that was present in Blue Ruin 1: Some Kind of Stranger to a more mature relationship. Derek is still the Master but has begun to let more of his tender feeling show and is very protective of Blue since the events that took place in Some Kind of Stranger. Blue was more mature as well and started to express more of his own desires instead of letting Derek dictate every move. I did enjoy the threesome aspect of the story, which shocked me because I didn’t think it could work with the Blue and Derek relationship, Katrina Strauss managed to explain the reasons behind Blue and Derek’s feelings and allow the third into their relationship without destroying the bond between them. I didn’t really like Cameron as a character, but I really have no patience for bullies and as much as he changed it still wasn’t’ enough for me to truly like him. Also, I wasn’t really sure Katrina Strauss would be able to pull it off and was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy Close to Me as much as I had enjoyed Some Kind of Stranger. I’m happy to report that I did enjoy Close to Me very much and that Katrina Strauss has written a book where the characters were allowed to grow and mature in such a way that the core characteristics remained the same while allowing them to develop in new and exciting ways.
