| Clementina is the widowed Countess Carmelth who, while raising her 5-year-old son born after her husband died, is expected to join her family (she is the eldest of several children born to the Marquess of Cheriton) to bring order to the chaotic lives of her siblings and parents while they await the hopeful return of Nicholas, her oldest brother who is missing during the war. There has been no word in several months concerning his welfare.
Clemmie, her nickname to her friends, has been in mourning for 5 years, first for her husband and then various other family members which has lingered for much too long. In addition, Clemmie and her son, Christopher (Kit, for short) have been more than a little accident prone for the past year. Traveling to visit with her family does not stop the accidents. During one of the stops on the trip to her parents, Clemmie and Kit see a man who is very big and obviously injured. He walks with a crutch but he still limps badly; That was the first, but not the last, encounter of Clemmie and Major Gideon Rhyle, who was separated from service after his near fatal accident. Clemmie had never considered remarrying because she had to maintain Kit's home and position for the little Earl and no man would want to live at Carmelth and raise an Earl to his majority. At least that is what she thought! Major Rhyle joined forces with another war hero, Lord Valence, to enjoy friendship and discuss the war. The two of them, in addition to being attracted to two of the Cherton ladies, join forces to ascertain why so many "accidents" have been happening to Clemmie and Kit. The accidents keep happening, the relationship escalates, and there is much conflict among the family because the Major is thought to be beneath her. And still Nicholas is not heard from! What else happened? This book is action packed, fast moving and I absolutely loved it. It is so good it is impossible to put down. Kudos to Ms. McLeod for this winner!
