| Tom Montgomery had been through hell during the Civil War. Now, in December, 1865, he was finally going home to his wife. He’s married Beth six months before he left for the war. He had lost one eye and walked with crutches, but was thankful he had both legs. That was until his wife’s grandfather told him that Beth had married, had children, and moved. In his devastation, he didn’t see Beth come to the door and ask her senile grandfather who was at the door and in his present condition she could not recognize him as he walked away.
Seven years later he went back to his parents’ home where he was not well received. He wanted his inheritance—his grandfather’s small farm. He would have to remove squatters from there. Until that could be handled, he stayed in town, where he became familiar with twin boys, around ten, who instantly loved him. Ms. Kathy Otten has written a fabulous story about a man and his soul mate who, even after so many years, had neither replaced the other. This poignant story is so emotionally remarkable that I read straight through. As Christmas season approaches, what a great book to read and give as a gift. The characters suffered so greatly that the book was moving. That they had so much in common, even years later, was awe-inspiring. I cannot say enough about this historical romance. Anyone would love to read it, regardless of genre. I applaud this author for her way with words.
