| Ashlyn Toscano is the daughter of a wizard who craves power. He wants to be the highest ranked mage in the kingdom and is willing to trade his daughter for his dream to be second only to the king. Ashlyn dreams of a lover who can cherish her but seems fated to belong to the king who once raped her. Basil d'Vortimer is a dragon shifter in a kingdom far removed from Avalonia. In his dreams Ashlyn is the light of his life and his mate. Can the two somehow find one another against the odds and make their dreams reality?
April Reid weaves an excellent tale of two very good people who only want a chance to live their lives. Ashlyn and Basil prove to be people of honor even during times when they could give it all up for self preservation. The contrast between these two special people is even more glaring against the fact that a father could threaten to kill his daughter if she doesn't live as he wants her to. It's almost too reminiscent of real life as we watch a king who has everything willing to cheat and use his power for control over others. This is one of those stories that reinforce the good that people can do in the world. Often without even really trying. Ashlyn and Basil are the type of people who inspire others and win their support with honor and kindness. The author spins an excellent fairy tale wrapped in the realities of life, love and magic.
