| Heather Waterston was twenty-nine years old, single, and lived with the fact that her family would never accept that she could be happy single. That could explain the fact that her family lived in Colorado while she resided in California. One by one she watched her friends marry. And now with the holidays looming in the near future, she would have to face her mother’s matchmaking yet again.
Her best friend for eleven years, Daniel Alvarez, lived in the apartment next door to hers. They spent an enormous amount of time together. He had now been dating Claudia for several months and had decided she was “the one.” He wanted the two most important women in his life to meet, so he invited Claudia to Heather’s for their Thanksgiving meal. The plot for this book was fresh and interesting. Ms. Kimberlee R. Mendoza has shown how challenging it can be when someone does not fit societal roles. She made her female main character strong, but vulnerable. The role of Daniel showed how many times what we need, but forget to ask God for, could be right under our noses. She made the dialogue between these two so realistic that it was as if I was there. And when the other characters were added, I could actually hear the voices of a myriad of mothers past. This storyline was fun, daring, and easy to read. The method used for trying to locate a boyfriend to take home to the family for Christmas was one I’ve not seen addressed in my readings. It was whimsical, typically sad at times, and almost predictable. That did not, however, minimize the entertainment factor. Mendoza did what she does so well and that is to tell a story that is almost impossible to put down. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted read, an inspirational romance or not, and a creative writing style that is both amusing and enjoyable.
