| Victoria Hubert is a lady librarian, enthralled by romance novels. Detective Angus McDonald is a retired cop who has posed for the sexy book covers.
Angus is in the library researching Richard Markov, a truly evil dude who managed to escape justice at his trial. Angus is taken with Victoria, but he doesn’t bother learning her last name. If he had, he’d know she is connected to the criminal he is seeking. Grandmother Elizabeth is a strong-willed 85-year-old, still pining for the husband she lost ten years earlier. Rupert had his share of secrets, and disappeared in a diving “accident.” I’m not sure why it was called an accident. Victoria witnessed the lines of his diving suit being cut and was injured herself by a mysterious diver. Rupert’s body was never found. But he left a lads of treasures from his shipwreck explorations -- and perhaps a real treasure. Markov has family connections and is a disturbed mama’s boy as well as a crafty killer. He wants what he feels is rightfully his. He causes the death of Victoria’s grandmother. He killed the butler as well. And now he’s out to get the bespectacled librarian. Jane Greenhill’s novel is populated by an intriguing supporting cast. Peter Arnold, Victoria’s boss and best friend, is delightful. He is as interested in the sexy Angus as Vic is. Victoria’s roommate Maya Raymond is an intelligent lawyer who ignores a guy who truly loves her in favor of a succession of Mr. Wrongs. The local bar scene is both fascinating and funny. Both lead characters are likable. The danger is palpable and the romance nicely developed. The suspense builds to a satisfying conclusion that is followed by a confusing but extremely spooky epilogue.
