Mona Lisa had been an abandoned infant, left to be raised by humans because one-quarter of her lineage is human. The remaining and dominant heritage is Monere, that species of children of the Moon. Mona Lisa, like her mother Sera, is a Mona or Queen of her people and she’s been given Louisiana as the center of her new territory. Fortunate it is that she had not inherited the sadistic cruelty of her mother Sera’s personality and practices, and fortunate it is for those now under Lisa’s rule. Monere life is not a pretty one, nor at all moral. Humans are fair game as are those of Mixed Blood. As the first Monere Mixed Blood Queen, Mona Lisa is unique, and she plans to rule in a unique manner as well. Already she has rescued and protected others of her ilk, of Mixed Blood as she is.

The Monere are the stuff of which the legends of vampires and werewolves have been created. They are able to shapeshift and the sun’s rays are deadly to them. Sexuality is a method of obtaining the transfer of powers and abilities as much as it is a means to pleasure, so they are highly promiscuous, both male and female Monere. Although Mona Lisa already has her own concepts of ruling and her own plans, she quickly discovers that the old regime’s ways haven’t dissolved at all, but instead run like an undercurrent which might well become an undertow carrying away all her joy and hopes for the future.

Once again, Sunny creates a masterful new world and populates it with characters who are among the best drawn I have seen. I am reminded here of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Fae series. The author demonstrates a marvelous grasp of the ability to construct new dimensions and new species, and populate them with appealing and well-delineated individuals and groups. The Mona Lisa stories certainly rank among that caliber, and I dearly hope to find the series continues beyond these first two stories, Mona Lisa Awakening and Mona Lisa Blossoming.
