| Dr. Rebecca 'Becca' Daniels has a special empathy for eight year old Meg Jacobs aka Sonia Thomas . Like her she witnessed the murder of her parents and was put into Witness Protection. Now the judge who's supposed to preside at the trial of the alleged killer of Meg's parents has been killed in front of Becca. Can she trust Kevin Jacobs, Meg's uncle, to be one of the good guys when so many she has trusted start to betray her?
Melanie Atkins pens a suspense filled with emotion. There's the love story between Becca and Kevin as a big part of it. But there's also an in depth look at what can happen to people in the Witness Protection program, their side of the story so to speak. It's also criminals with the façade of those who should protect and serve. The fears and frustrations Becca has experienced in the past and Meg is going through now come across vividly as the author constructs this tale. Meg and Becca both come across as two of the most courageous people you'll ever want to meet in a book. Kevin is no slacker either as he pushes on through injuries that could have stopped a lesser man in his tracks. Some secondary characters also shine in showing that they're willing to do what they think is right no matter what the circumstances. Ms. Atkins shows her gift as a writer in building this novel with so much evil trying to take control but still letting us feel good about those who work so hard to stop it. This is one of the best books I've read for a while.
