D.J. Marshall, Diane to her friends, was the new project manager for the DeBrett Christian Church project in the tiny town of DeBrett, Illinois. This small town was mostly made up of Cuban immigrants in the midst of Swedish and German farmers. This group was tightly knit and some didn’t readily accept strangers. Diane was to stay there for about seven months while rebuilding/remodeling the church. The funds for this project came from the life insurance policy of one of their deceased members. She would stay in a home which had never been lived in—again because this woman died.

Diane had emotional issues to deal with because her long-time boyfriend had married another. The widower who provided his deceased-wife’s insurance money for the project was Paul Cameron. He had been accepted as part of the town’s family by marrying his Rennie. Her death devastated him. The past two years had not lessened the grief. He couldn’t bring himself to live in the house he’d so lovingly built for his wife and their expected son. Paul’s life began to change when he crossed paths with Diane. Not all the town’s folks were pleased.

This book by Deborah Kinnard was such a great read. It possessed all the elements needed to create a top seller—from one extreme to the other. This book was like a roller coaster ride of emotions. I laughed. I cried. I cried some more. The one thing I did not do was get bored! Her main characters possessed traits which definitely pulled at my heart strings. They had faced, and endured, so much heartache. Both had emotional baggage but were struggling to allow God to work things for their good.

The myriad of supporting characters were really interesting. They were also well presented and quite believable. The non-stop action kept me actively pursuing the happily-ever-after. There was definitely challenge; this was no cookie-cutter storyline. The dialogue was good and I enjoyed the book tremendously. This is definitely a book that can be enjoyed by all romance lovers, even the young adults.
