|Arianna Calin is a supernatural cop. She is the Guardian for Riverdale's Olde Town area where most of the Otherworlders live. From werecreatures to vampires and demons of all sorts, the Otherworlders mostly behave during their interactions with their human neighbors. But not always. Goshen Park, located on the edge of Olde Town, is off limits to humans after dark when the Otherworlders wander it freely. On patrol in the park one night, Ari stops a werewolf from attacking a pair of trespassing teens. When the angry wolf glared at her and left, she realized there was another magical creature nearby. Andreas De Luca, the mysterious, Armani-clothed vampire, showed himself and maybe even flirted with her, she really wasn't certain of his intentions because vampires didn't like witches, not even half witches like Ari.
Andreas is cool, aloof, and important within the hierarchy of the vampire community. He seems to be amused by Ari and yet not happy at all about any attraction he feels for her. Arianna is half human/half witch but because of her background, she was trained more as a Guardian than a witch and that is going to prove very interesting for everyone involved as the series continues. She has both human and Otherworlder friends that all work well in the story. The premise and the associated mystery are well crafted and excellently written. The story is so interesting because there are so many possible storylines that can evolve from this first book. Great job, Ms. Shields!
"Awakening the Fire" is Book One in Ally Shields' Guardian Witch series. I can't wait for the rest of the series from this exciting new author because I will definitely be reading them all. The mystery kept me reading until late into the night. The tension between the main characters, based both sexual attraction and a species distrust between vamps and witches, kept me waiting anxiously to see if Arianna and Andreas would ever get together. I loved it.
