| Dr. Saylor Oz, a psychologist, sex therapist, doesn’t believe her friend, Gwendolyn Applebee committed suicide. It’s been six weeks, since her death and it still bothers Saylor. Gwen, considered a loner, and a bit antisocial, was a brilliant egghead. The archaeobotanist and perfume-maker, left a suicide note that Saylor thinks is a poem with a covert message. Saylor believes Gwen’s spirit won’t rest until the killer is found. She takes the information to a detective, who doesn’t believe its murder. Saylor turns to best pal, Benita Morales, a female analyst by day; and professional female boxer, to help her find answers. But Benita is not the only one. When Eldridge Mace, a retired professional boxer, who often sees Saylor at the gym, suspects she is in grave danger, he will do everything to keep her safe.
Aphrodisiac is a page-turner. Saylor and Benita are invigorating characters. I also like their line of work; it was refreshing to read about the different job descriptions. While the story is full of suspense, there are also some perky moments of Saylor that add a touch of wit to the book. I love Saylor’s thoughts on speaking with the Detective and a can of raid, not to mention when she speaks of her mom being cheerful and finding a new stool softener. With strong characterizations, Allyson Roy spins a romantic suspense that has the reader involved right along in the mystery of Gwen’s death. Saylor and Eldridge have some close-knit action that creates some stirring chemistry, perhaps they will start their own little mystery in a sequel, maybe? The storyline is strong with enough blending of well-rounded secondary characters that holds the readers interest all the way to the dramatic conclusion. I’m wondering what this happy author couple has in store with future works.
