Aspen Townsend had loved Colt Larkin since before she was fifteen. She had hated him since Christmas of that same year. She had kept her diary full of her sensual dreams of him. Then after he kissed her under the mistletoe, everything changed. Before she was very active and loved hanging around her older brother Ashton and his best friend Colt. After she heard the boys laughing saying that not only had they dared Colt to kiss her but to kiss her because she was black she retreated into herself. Now, twenty years later, her love was buried deeply under the hurt and disappointment.

Colt had loved Aspen while she was still too young to date. Three years older than her, Colt faced Ashton’s wrath when he accepted a dare and kissed Aspen. He realized that the two were meant to be together and that Colt had real feelings for her. After Ashton’s death ten years ago, everything changed for both Colt and Aspen. It had been twenty years since they had even seen each other.

Ms. Aliyah Burke writes phenomenal scripts about black/white relationships. Her characters are solid, believable and worthy of our attention. Nothing is done just because of color—I love that! I like to see people accepted as who and what they are regardless of skin color. Hurray for Burke’s attention to detail.

The families of both Colt and Aspen were incorporated into the storyline. The same aspects that affect our daily lives were important to these people. That makes a great read. I had trouble putting the book down. The poignant scenes lend credibility to this amazing story. The fact that each of them had been subjected to so much sorrow and turmoil, both years ago and recently, endeared them to this reader.

This newest addition to Burke’s booklist is another winner. I highly recommend it. The sexual scenes are sensual and provocative but they do not dominate the story. There is a solid, loving couple in this work of art that belongs on your keeper shelf.
