| Lindsay Markham and Anais Darnby have been friends since childhood. He's on the point of finally telling her how deep his feelings go. He's even purchased an engagement ring. A jealous woman who wants Lindsay, or any man with money, betrays them both. Between the evil Rebecca who will stop at nothing to get what she wants and the escape into opium that Lindsay can't or won't control, their feelings for one another spiral into a downward cycle that can destroy them both. They both seem to give up on love with only the connection of the lust that over powers their other feelings. Regaining the friendship and love in their hearts seems impossible.
Charlotte Featherstone draws us into this powerful story of addiction. Few readers will be able to resist the emotions that are evoked by seeing these two people struggle. When love walks a fine line with hatred for one another's actions it's usually Anais who comes out the stronger person. She has her own burdens and insecurities to bear constantly. The put downs she lives with are devastating but she copes by not allowing others to be demeaned like she has been. Like most addicts Lindsay blames his actions on everyone else. His parents, his friends, his needs, Anais, all bear the brunt of his obsessions and his narcissistic picture of everything that happens. His view of the world and the people in it is so clouded by the opium haze that it almost hurts to read about it. There are some heart wrenching emotional scenes as Lindsay's father and friends bare their souls to him in hopes of helping him. Throughout all the ups and downs Ms. Featherstone keeps a connection between Anais and Lindsay. Are they strong enough to make their world right again? The author does a great job leading the characters and the reader through the hell that addiction can be.
