| Fiona Fairweather had been left by everyone she ever lovedher parents died, and the aunt (Tilly) who raised her had died. The only constant in her life was her betrothal to Roger Ranly, the son of Lord Arthur and Lady Buckfield. The Buckfields had been best of friends with Fiona’s late parents and, between the four adults, they had made a commitment to have their children marry when they reached the age of 20. Roger and Fiona had been best friends and planned to marry at the precise moment. When Aunt Tilly died, arrangements were made for Earl Walter Rocheford, a friend of Lord Buckfield, to accompany Fiona to their home. Lord Rocheford was making a round of his estates in the area before returning to London when he stopped and picked up Fiona and her maid. On the way to his country estate, they had a bad accident and were delayed for several weeks for Lord Rocheford to recover from his injuries.
Walter’s mother, Lady Rocheford, decided to visit the country estate and check out the woman with whom he was becoming such friends. After encouraging Fiona to travel back to London with her, they arrived at the Buckfields’ home in the midst of a large party. Upon entering the party and finding they were celebrating Roger’s wedding to another woman, Fiona walked right up to him and knocked him flat of his back! Ms. S.D. Grady has written a passionately exciting historical romance that has strong, colorful characters (i.e. Fiona) that carry us along on their adventures. Fiona was definitely not what the ton expected in a wife-to-be, even though her dowry was large enough to make her popular to the young men who needed funding. The women were horrified at the way she acted; the men were indulgent because of their admiration for her determination. The other characters, while well developed, were not quite so flamboyant. The resolve of Lord Rocheford to prove to Fiona that he loved her was invincible. This love story did not follow expected lines; it definitely kept me entertained until the very end. I highly recommend it to all!
