|Annie can no longer count the number of times that her father has gotten too deep into his gambling. He used her as his final gamble, usually losing her services in payment. In fact, she's come to a numbing sense of inevitability. But this time when Big John comes and gets her out of her family's room, she can't help wishing it was this gentle giant that she was going to. Then she finds out that this time her Dad may have gone too far and lost her to the saloon owners Cage and Big John, because they have no intention of giving her back, ever. Can Annie really believe in forever with both men that she's so drawn to?
This is Ms. Sax at her very best in this short story. It's the fifth in the Wolves of the Wild West series, but I had no problem reading it as a stand alone novel without having read the earlier books. Well, of course, except now wanting to read more of the series. Somehow, she managed to get just enough back story into a relatively small amount of pages that you actually care about the characters. But she also adds just the right amount of heat between them to keep you reading straight through, anticipating when the main characters come together. Not to mention the happily ever after you can't help wanting for Annie and her men.
