| Twice divorced Melissa dreaded becoming a single mother with nothing once her kids left for college. A mysterious jolt from an antique hair-perming machine made that future unlikely. Suddenly, she had magic powers – and a mystical hunky instructor to explain her new abilities. Brent has to be a good teacher: if he doesn’t succeed, he may spend another 200 years in limbo.
Melissa’s best friend Liz gets to witness many of the lessons and hand out advice and support. The fourth major character appears mostly as a bronze haze. This signifies the malevolent leader of the magical tribe Melissa has now joined. Tia Bangs has created an interesting diversion here. There is definite suspense. Brent knows, but can’t reveal what is in store for Melissa. And as the story progresses, we learn that there is much that Brent does not know. There is a viable and entertaining mystery: just what does the leader have in store for Melissa? And why? The story has danger, romance, passion, and a great deal of fun. The characters are great. Melissa is strong-willed and very easy to identify with. She’s an intelligent woman, studying her magical textbook willingly. She’s also no–nonsense and quick to anger. Brent’s complex part magic, part human make-up is fascinating and totally believable. They battle against a prophecy in order to save their lives – and perhaps the world. Along the way, Melissa and Brent form a strong emotional and physical bond. The author shows great skill in convincing the reader that all this hocus-pocus could be going on right next door. There’s a lot of physical action in the final showdown between Melissa and the leader. There is a satisfying sex scene, but there is also a great deal of emotional growth and interdependence. Melissa and Brent seem destined for a long life together. It’s a great read.
