After the murder of her mother and the kidnapping of her little brother, Asha, Challen’s father, the Seer to the king of Bainevah, stole the little girl and ran away with her. They ended up at an oasis, where her father could keep her safe from harm. Of course, Challen learned much from her father. She is a wonderful student and has many talents, most of them have not yet revealed themselves. The kingdom of Bainevah worships the Mother, Matrika. The Mother asks much of those she blesses with special gifts. When a man comes and attacks their home, Challen’s father decides it’s time to go back to Bainevah. Unfortunately, Challen is the only one that can see the man that attacked them had no shadow. So, back to Bainevah they go. Challen is immediately whisked away to the Healer’s Temple so she can study and learn more about healing.

On the other hand, we have Elzan, oldest son of the king. As of yet, the king has yet to name a Crown Prince. His mother is the High Priestess of the Healer’s Temple. She is also the favored concubine of the king. When his father sets the task of learning everything about the Prophecy he can, he runs into a woman. A beautiful woman with red hair and he’s immediately attracted to her.

Is the Prophecy being fulfilled? Exactly what parts do Elzan and Challen play in the Prophecy? Is this the Prophecy Challen’s father foretold? Will anything come of their attraction to each other?

10,000 SUNS is a wonderful, encompassing fantasy. Michelle Levigne has done a wonderful job of showing us the land of Bainevah and its surrounding neighbors. This land is very complex with all the magic and religious beliefs, but the story never bogs down in details. The characters are all richly portrayed and we feel right along with them, from Challen’s time in the Sanctuary, to the complex emotions between Elzan and his mother and father. 10,000 SUNS pulled me in from the very first page and kept reading right up until the satisfying conclusion. I can’t wait for the next story in this series. I just hope it’s Asha’s story!
