Brandon is one of the Brethren, an ancient clan of ruthless vampires. Like other Brethren families, the Nobles have accumulated great wealth and prestige, never marrying outside of their kin, never leaving the isolated Kentucky farmlands where they live, undetected, among their prey. Horrified by his birthright, Brandon shunned the ritual of the first kill, earning the Brethren's lasting wrath. But the exhilarating passion he and Angelina share rouses the primitive impulses he has tried so hard to deny. Even if Brandon can protect Angelina from his enemies, can he save her from his own dark thirsts?

An Interview with Sara Reinke
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Sara, welcome back to TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Dark Thirst.

SR: Hi, Holly! Thanks so much for having me here. It's great to be back with TRS. "Dark Thirst" is the story of Brandon Noble, who was born to a sect of ancient, ruthless vampires called the Brethren. Horrified by his birthright, he shuns the ritual of the first kill and runs away from home, earning the Brethren's lasting wrath. When he falls in love with a human named Angelina -- forbidden among the Brethren -- his fate is sealed. Can Brandon protect the woman he loves from his enemies...and his own dark thirsts?

I've received fantastic response from both readers and reviewers to "Dark Thirst." It's the first in a series chronicling the Brethren.

HH: This is the spellbinding tale of two people reunited after five years and both very different. Where did you get the idea for this amazing story?

SR: I grew up in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, and often wondered about the people who lived nestled away on gigantic Thoroughbred horse farms that are the signature landmarks of the region. I imagined it would be easy for a sect of vampires to live in such an environment, enough among humans to prey upon us, but separate enough so that we'd never be aware of their existence.

HH: What do you like best about Brandon?

SR: Brandon is deaf and mute. Throughout the book, he communicates primarily through American Sign Language and hand-written notes. I enjoyed the challenges and opportunities as a writer that using a disable hero presented to me. What I liked the most about Brandon is that he never perceives his handicaps as anything detrimental to him. He has been ostracized among the Brethren for being different, ridiculed and tormented, but he finds the strength to stand up for his convictions and to follow his heart.

HH: Your book garnered some amazing reviews. How do you like the feedback for this work?

SR: I have been absolutely tickled shitless. Seriously -- I used to think that one of the greatest satisfactions I could experience as a writer would come from holding a printed copy of my book in my hands. But especially since the release of "Dark Thirst," and having hundreds of folks from all over the United States and the world take the time to contact me, let me know how much they enjoyed the book -- to see so many people sharing my enthusiasm and passion for the story and the characters has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my entire life. More than just gaining new readers, I feel as if I've made new friends.

HH: What are you working on now?

SR: I just completed the sequel to "Dark Thirst" at the end of 2007. I was hoping for a summer, 2008 release for the book, "Dark Hunger," but just learned it won't be out until September. I'm currently wrapping up revisions for a new paranormal project to give to my agent, and then I'm going to start on outlining the third installment of The Brethren series, so we can pitch it to my editor. *fingers crossed*

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

SR: I've been writing since I was a little girl. For as long as I can remember, this is what I wanted to be "when I grew up." While most folks can trace their childhood through the different kinds of toys they owned, I can track mine by the typewriter or word processor I was using, LOL. I think I've always had storytelling in my heart; it's inherent to my nature. I've tried in the past to pursue more "grown up" careers, like journalism, but in the end, I always come back full circle to fiction writing. It's part of me, and always will be.

HH: How have things changed for you since then?

SR: I think particularly in the last seven years or so, I've really focused on improving myself as a writer, and learning to hone my craft. I've dedicated myself to the pursuit of writing, of building a career as a published author, and not just as a past-time. I think that loving to write is the first and most important step; familiarizing yourself with the basics of the business and learning how to take your work to the next level, the next rung on your personally defined ladder of success, is of equal, worthwhile merit.

HH: What do you still enjoy today about being a storyteller?

SR: The same things I always have, LOL. To borrow sort of from "Star Trek," it's the opportunity to explore strange new worlds, to envision new life and new civilizations, to boldly take myself and anyone who wants to read and join me to places where no one has gone before.

HH: What would you like for readers to know about you?

SR: I love to hear from them -- and I love to give free stuff away, LOL. Seriously, I always enjoy hearing from readers, and invite folks to feel free to drop me a line through my website. I also have regular monthly contests where I give away ebooks, paperbacks and more -- great prizes every month from me and some of your favorite romance authors. (And of course, I love participating each month in The Romance Studio's Book-A-Day Giveaways!) Because I really do love freebies, I also have a free novel-length historical romance ebook available for download at my website, "Heart's Ransom." www.sarareinke.com.

HH: Thank you!
