An Interview with Belinda McBride
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Belinda, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is When I Fall and is the second in a fascinating series. Where did the idea for the series come from?
BM: Thanks for hosting me! The series started as an exercise in writing first person. I had an idea about a princess and a one-eyed ruffian, but for whatever reason, the story never took off. So just to shake things up, I got rid of the princess and threw in a lost prince instead. From there, the story built itself quite easily. As I worked, the world just rose up around the characters.
HH: How did An Uncommon Whore kick it off?
BM: An Uncommon Whore is sort of the origin story for the series. It gives the reader the background of the two protagonists and tells of the tragedy that devastated their planet and culture It's here that they set forth on the path to their future together. It also established a few characters who will step up and take focus in the future.
HH: How does When I Fall continue it and what can you tell us about future stories?
BM: When I Fall was a tough book. All the characters in the series had suffered greatly during the invasion of their planet. During the aftermath, their focus was on survival. WIF starts about a year after An Uncommon Whore ends, and deals with the delayed reaction to the tragedies suffered by Helios, Griffin and their family. Also, Helios is trying to find a place for his planet in the Interstellar Coalition. He and Griffin will come face-to-face with the villains responsible for their plight. In the future, some of the supporting characters will step up and take center stage, but Helios and Griffin will always be the backbone of the series. Look for Caius, Markus, Raven, Lefi Dhrahn, Carlotta, Dierdre and others. Also keep an eye out for some cross-over characters from Belle Starr. The two series are set in the same universe.
HH: What will erotic romance readers love about this series?
BM: The Uncommon Whore series is sexy, passionate and highly emotional. It deals with beautiful damaged men, mysterious, seductive aliens and since it's a space opera, has a good deal of action and adventure. Hot sex, high adventure, passion, pathos and hot sex. Yup, I said that twice.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BM: I have a short holiday story coming to MLR Press, it's my debut with them. The title is Gift of the Maggie and is a major departure for me, as it's a western. Since I grew up with horses and cattle and rodeo, it made sense to visit that world. I'm working on a couple other projects as well, most notably my Truckee Wolves and the Arcada (Blacque/Bleu) series for Loose Id.
HH: How much of your day is devoted to your writing career?
BM: I try to put in an 8 hour work day. A good deal of it is devoted to email, marketing and so forth. My actual writing time can vary from fifteen minutes to a twelve hour marathon, depending on my mood and my workload.
HH: What goals have you set for yourself in your career?
BM: I'm working on a couple non-erotic projects, one is an urban fantasy, the other is paranormal suspense. I'd like to move out to mainstream publishing, depending on the health of that industry. I've also got a few projects that I'd like to self-publish. My heart is really with independent e-publishing, though.
HH: What are you reading at the moment?
BM: Lynn Lorenz's Common Powers series.
HH: Where is your favorite place to shop for books?
BM: There's a little independent bookshop here in town; I love to hang out there and chat and check out what's new. She keeps a few of my titles in stock. Frankly, I do most of my book shopping online now. I love my e-reader!
HH: 10) Any special plans for the holidays this year?
BM: a. No, my mother is having health issues so we're sticking close to home. I might drive to Los Angeles and visit my daughter for a few days. She works as a chef on charter jets, so she's literally not on the ground often. I'll be helping my younger daughter with some fundraising for her class in school…she's studying to be a dental hygienist and they raise money for the entire class to take their state exams. So watch my blog…I'll announce when we have things on Etsy!
HH: Thank you!
