An Interview with Jade Buchanan
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Jade, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is Hard Candy -- and it has a parallel story called Penny Candy. What can you tell us about these two stories and the idea behind this?

JB: Thanks so much for letting me talk! Penny Candy and Hard Candy are part of a new multi-author series that I'm so proud to be part of. Bandit Creek is the brainchild of Vivi Anna and several of my other close writer friends and the series itself covers a multitude of genres and heat levels: http://banditcreekbooks.com

My two contributions came about because I wanted to write a story about a woman coming home and reuniting with her high school boyfriend. Only, every time I sat down to write what came next, the characters kept going in different directions. I finally just went with it, and wrote two parallel stories that represent the idea, for me, that our decisions shape who we are but they also shape who we end up with. In Penny Candy, Penny Anderson falls in love with her high school boyfriend, Craig Baxter. In Hard Candy, there's another man, Douglas "Mack" McKenzie, who is thrust into their relationship and the twosome soon becomes a threesome.

HH: What direction does Hard Candy take us in?

JB: Hard Candy explores different relationships between old lovers. Penny has to decide if she can be with two men, one who she's always been in love with, and another who has always intrigued her. Penny also has the added difficulty of discovering what happened to her mom years before when she was found dead. In order for Penny to move on and have any kind of relationship with Craig and Mack, she has to find out the truth behind her parents secrets. Craig and Mack had one brief encounter years ago right after Penny left town. Now that all three are in the same place for the first time in a decade, it's up to them to decide if they want to be together.

HH: What do you like best about Penny and why will readers relate to her?

JB: I love how open-minded Penny is. She's had a bit of a rough life, in that her mother died when she was in high school and her dad promptly moved her away from everything she knew. But, she's ready to take a stand and figure out what she wants in life. She wants to have some closure on the past, and discover what really happened to her mom, but she also wants to find love and be with someone who cares about her. I think everyone can relate to that.

HH:What can you tell us about Mack and Craig and why will readers be taken with them?

JB: Mack and Craig are old friends who became lovers once upon a time back in high school. They've each done their own thing and gone in separate directions since then, but now they're finally in the same place and trying to find out what they want to do with their lives. Craig is a bit of a jokester and an incredibly easy-going guy, but he's also an astute business man. He owns the candy store in town and he's doing everything he can to make sure it prospers. Mack has just come back home to open up a new microbrewery and now that his professional life is thriving he wants to discover if he can have a future with Craig. He never counted on Penny coming back into their lives, and he's sure that he doesn't have a shot now that Craig's first love is home. He's a bit vulnerable because of that. I hope that readers fall in love with them as surely as Penny does. They're honest, loveable friends who genuinely want each other to be happy.

HH: What can you tell us about Penny Candy -- where? when?

JB: Penny Candy is the parallel tale to Hard Candy and it starts in the same way that Hard Candy does. Penny Anderson has come home to Bandit Creek to discover what happened to her mother, but she's also interested in seeing if the spark with Craig is still there. It's currently available through Smashwords and Amazon, and the buy links can be found on my website: http://www.jadebuchananbooks.com/pennycandyhardcandy.htm.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

JB: The next release is a lesbian short story called Taking Chances. After that, the next books out will be a few re-released titles that I'm revising and expanding and I'm pretty excited about sharing them with readers again. My current backlist can be found on my website ( http://www.jadebuchananbooks.com/books.htm) and I do my best to update it as soon as I have news.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself in your career?

JB: I've set a number of goals for my career and I'm slowly but surely making my way through the list. Right now, I'm working on an Urban Fantasy that's a bit different that what I normally write.

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

JB: I just finished Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews. Not sure which book I'll pick up next, but I have waaay too many books on my TBR shelf so I'm sure I won't have a problem deciding :)

HH: Where is your favorite place to shop for books?

JB: I pretty much shop wherever I can get books, but I do most of my buying online. It's just easier and definitely more convenient for me to be able to buy an ebook at midnight and read it immediately! Because of that, I probably do most of my buying on Amazon.

HH: Any special plans for the holidays this year?

JB: No big plans, but that's a good thing! I wanted a quiet week where I can sit back and relax with a few books and get to spend time with the family. It looks like I'll get my wish!

HH: Thank you!
