Brannan Black

Life as we knew it pretty much ended with the lightning fast spread of the plague. The media called it Werewolf Syndrome. Women got sick, many died. They were the lucky ones. Men got sick, too, but those who didn't die... changed. A few immune men, like myself, joined the bands of refugees, scrounging for survival in the post-apocalyptic devastation.

I lived in a fortified compound with a couple dozen women, a bunch of kids and two asshole straight guys. Sounds like a man's wet dream -- unless you happen to be the last gay man standing. At the time, risking my life scavenging in the city sounded like a fucking vacation.

I went out hunting supplies and found something else. Not a quick death, or even a slow, painful one at the hands of the beasts -- no such luck. Instead I find myself captive to the largest, most well organized gang of beast men ever. Their leader, Mace, wants more than just a generator -- he wants my body. Oddly, a certain part of me likes that idea. The other part the part with working survival instincts -- insist I get the hell out of Dodge before my smart mouth gets the shit kicked out of me. Again. Tradeoffs...

About Brannan Black

When Brannan Black was a teenager she would sit for hours at a time reading fantasy books, her mind lost in other worlds. Often times she would be unaware of the world as the characters played out scenarios in her mind. When she had children she found that she no longer had time for reading as she would often feel like ignoring her kids. So she set down her books to tend to her children but her mind continued to create vivid stories. When watching a TV program little "what if's" would run through her brain. Earlier in her life she used to write down these "what if's" but she found it difficult to write these on paper as they would end up with scribbled out sentences and words trailing down the edge of the page.

Now a-days, the advent of the computer and the fact that her kids have moved out of her home caused her to rethink writing. One day she woke from a particularly vivid dream and went straight to her computer to write a story about it. Since that dream she has several books published and a few more in progress, most finding their stories and characters inspirations from dreams. "My characters often start in my dreams then grow in daydreams. I guess they kick around in my head for a while until a story starts to form" says Brannan Black "In a lot of ways my muse is kinda like an alter ego. She allows me to explore the what if's in life, like what if the world ended this way, how would the normal person react?"

Having a realistic feel to the plot and action is important to her.And action, even violence is a big part of her work. She feels that part of reality is showing the driving forces behind people. The emotional connections we all long to make along with the violence we can all feel. "The biggest driving force behind people is emotional connections, and that often entails sex as a form of connection" Brannan describes her stories containing no few steamy passages. But beyond the sex is a level of emotions that help bind characters together and help the reader understand who her characters are. "The saying it's always the darkest before the dawn I find to be particularly true, you can't have growth without the pain to get you there," Brannan Black states "So my stories tend to be a little on the darker side but I find it is important not to downplay what my characters are feeling, and how the changes they are going through affects them"

For Brannan Black writing is not just a hobby, it's her life. She finds her purpose in letting characters live through her writing, and letting people know that voice inside her head. Brannan explains "To me writing is more than just a profession; it's a way of life. It's a way to take what's inside of me nad touch other people. Whether they learn something profound from my books or are able to just get a little R&R from the rest of the world"

An Interview with Brannan Black
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Brannan, thank you for talking with us at TRS Blue! Your featured book is Wolfman: Apocalypse and is the first in a smoking hot series. Where did the idea for the series come from?

BB: I had a very vivid dream that just wouldn't let me go. Daniel was born in that dream complete with all that snark and attitude.

HH: How does Apocalypse kick it off?

BB: It starts with Daniel getting captured by wolfmen. At the beginning, he expects to die a painful death. The only wolfmen he's seen have all been violent beasts. Even so, he refuses to cower or give in to panic.

HH: How do Revelations, Judgement and Salvation continue it?

BB: In truth, it's really one story, at least the long plot. Each one has it's own set of issues to be dealt with. Apocalypse introduces us to the characters and the world they live in. Revelations show us more about who they are and the perils they face. Judgement really winds things tighter while resolving some internal problems. Salvation lets us look inside Daniel to some of his inner demons as well as how he copes with the trauma of civilizations end. Book five, Genesis is due out Nov 10. It wraps up the over all story line started in Apocalypse.

HH: What will erotic romance readers love about this series?

BB: Wolfmen use sex as part of their pack bonding. And they are nearly insatiable. And creative. And hot. *wicked grin*

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

BB: Next up is the third Wolfman Tale which are set in the same world and have some over lap of characters. Mei and her wolfmen, Derek and Jay still need to find a permanent place. After that, I have new characters and situation set in the wolfman world including Daniel's cowboy nephew.

HH: How much of your day is devoted to your writing career?

BB: Most of it. If I'm not writing I'm thinking about writing or researching or promoting or learning or... Well, you get the idea.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself in your career?

BB: My real dream is to hit the New York Times best seller list.

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

BB: In between writing, I am a voracious reader. I also read pretty fast and am currently between books, barely. I read a lot of paranormal and m/m romance. I like mysteries, too, as long as it's also a romance.

HH: Where is your favorite place to shop for books?

BB: Online. I love shopping online. I belong to several yahoo groups, publisher newsletters and such to keep my TBB pile teetering on the brink of falling over in a huge crash.

HH: Any special plans for the holidays this year?

BB: I have family in the area we get together with. This year, my daughter is hosting Thanksgiving dinner for the first time. Yay!

HH: Thank you!
