Reviews for The Night Before the Wedding

"This is the kind of book that makes people fall in love with romance novels. Sensual, eloquent, extremely well written - Outstanding!!!" 5 STARS! - The Romance Readers Connection

"THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING by Debra Mullins is a story of love, trust, learning to believe in the unbelievable and, ultimately, following the desires of one’s heart. Every page is filled with action and adventure, love and romance. There isn’t one dull moment in this book, and the only disappointment was that it had to end. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING is true reading magic." - Romance Reader at Heart

"Debra Mullins can write truly engaging romances, and most will find the same here. Catherine and Gabriel don’t seem like suitable mates in the beginning because their feelings for each other are because of some unseen force pushing them together. But through some hardships, they figure out their love for each other is as real as it can be. If you enjoy sexy Highlanders and two characters who are constantly at odds with each other, but still have time to kiss each other like there is no tomorrow, THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING is the one to read." - Romance Junkies

"This is a fun and exciting historical romance with appealing characters and an unusual situation to be overcome. Gabriel and Catherine are both likable characters with a lot of chemistry, but each would have married someone else, given the choice at first. They feel an incredibly strong attraction to each other, but each doubts that the marriage will be successful. These are two very strong minded and attractive characters. The welfare of the people takes precedence, and their attraction and liking for each other only grows. I loved the other characters as well, particularly little Fay, who is destined to be the next Bride. I also felt for Mr. Depford and his fear that his daughter may become as mad as her mother. This is one involving love story that you will not be able to put aside until the last page." - The Romance Studio

An Interview with Debra Mullins
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Debra, welcome to The Romance Studio! Please tell us about your featured book, The Night Before the Wedding.

DM: The Night Before the Wedding is about a Scottish curse that brings together a London heiress and an impoverished Scottish chief. The curse was set in place to end the conflict between the Farlan and MacBraedon clans. Every generation, a Farlan woman is born with a dagger-shaped birthmark that marks her as the next Bride who must marry the chief of the MacBraedons. If the two do not marry, the lands and prosperity of both clans dry up, the chief will have no children with any other wife he might take, and the heroine goes slowly mad. Twenty years before, Catherine’s mother had run away from her destined husband to marry a wealthy Englishman. Needless to say, she went mad and killed herself. Now Catherine is starting to experience the onset of madness, but she knows nothing about the curse. When Gabriel shows up and tells her that marrying him will cure her insanity, she thinks HE is the one who might be crazy. <G>

HH: Your heroine thinks she’s losing her mind and your hero tells her that he’s the cure. Being a fan of historical romance, I love this unique twist. Where did you get the idea for this story?

DM: Believe it or not, this story came to me in a dream. I wrote down the idea, but I didn’t get it on paper until years later when the opportunity presented itself. This has never happened to me before or since. I took the initial idea of a curse between the clans and ran with it. There has to be consequences of a curse, after all!

HH: What do you like best about Gabriel MacBraedon?

DM: I had a lot of fun with Gabriel. Here’s a man who will do anything to take care of his people, yet being a Scotsman and just a hint desperate because of the famine back home, he does things a little crazier than your average Regency hero. Making a human ladder of his clansmen, for instance, so he can break into Catherine’s bedroom. <G> I like his sense of honor and loyalty.

HH: How did you get your start as a writer, Debra?

DM: I’ve been writing since about 6th grade, where I used to write stories about my favorite TV show starring me and my friends as supporting characters. I’ve always wanted to be a novelist, but when I found myself a stay-at-home mom with a two-year old, I decided to knuckle down and try to make it happen. Then I sold my first historical romance to Avon books, and I have been there ever since.

HH: How have things changed in your career since then?

DM: Different genres have come and gone. Publishing as a business is getting tighter.

HH: How do you keep the writing process fresh for yourself at this point?

DM: I keep trying to learn new things. I go to conferences and take online classes. I talk to other writers about their processes. I try different methods of plotting and scheduling writing time.

HH: What are working on now? What do you have up next for your readers?

DM: I am currently working on another historical for Avon, but it has no title as of yet. It will be a Regency romance about identity theft. Someone is running around impersonating the hero, a duke, and he has to deal with the repercussions of this. One of those repercussions is a baby, brought to the hero by the heroine, who believes him to be the father.

HH: What is a typical day like for you?

DM: Like most people, I have a day job I go to every day. My evenings and weekends are often spent working on my books. Sometimes when I am on deadline, I get up at 5am to work while the house is still quiet and the phone doesn’t ring. <G>

HH: What do you enjoy reading?

DM: I read mostly romance and some fantasy. Some of my favorite authors are Nora Roberts (especially her J.D. Robb series), Mercedes Lackey, Susan Meier, Shana Abé, Marjorie M. Liu, Jenna Kernan and Suzanne Enoch.

HH: Will readers and fans be able to find you at any book signings or conferences this year?

DM: I plan on attending the RWA conference in San Francisco this July, and I will probably be at the NJ Romance Writers conference in October.

HH: Thank you!
