Shara Lanel

Kitty Lazarus can’t help reading the new pub owner’s mind -- that’s her gift -- but his thoughts are very different from anyone else’s, very 3-D, and they always involve stripping her naked and doing -- other things. But who is this blonde lady he keeps thinking about, and why does he sometimes picture himself in front of a mirror sprouting fur and fangs?

Available in January from Loose Id!

Haden Blackwood doesn’t need the complication of lusting after the rental storeowner, especially when she leases the space he plans to expand his pub into. Worse, she has the uncanny ability to guess his thoughts. He’s got too many secrets to keep, like a tendency to howl at the moon when it’s full and a warrant for his arrest. But he can’t fight his sexual attraction to Kitty -- she smells so good! -- and pretty soon he’s going to have to act on it.

But his secrets may be revealed as someone from his past tries to frame him -- again -- for a murder he didn’t commit. If he he doesn’t trust Kitty with his true nature, he may find himself locked in jail during the full moon -- not the kind of publicity his puub needs. But if he does involve her in his complicated life, she may find herself the target of a madman.

An Interview with Shara Lanel
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Shara, welcome back to The Romance Studio! Please tell us about your featured book, Blame It on The Moon.

SL: A werewolf wanted for murder and a mind reader who could discover and betray his secret. Haden is the owner of the new pub next door to Kitty's DVD rental store, and he's got quite a few secrets to keep, not the least of which is that he sprouts fur and fangs during the full moon. Kitty has her own secret-she can read minds-so she learns more about Haden on their first meeting than she's comfortable with, like the fact that he wants to take over her store space. They can't fight their physical attraction any more than they can keep their secrets hidden. Can sharing their secrets set each other free? Blame It on the Moon is coming to www.Loose-Id.com January 15th!

HH: A woman who can read minds and a man with secrets. Where did you get the idea for this steamy story?

SL: I started with the mind reader idea. I've worked in restaurants and retail through high school and college, and as a writer I spent a lot of time trying to guess each customer's story. So the idea developed that Kitty, through a fluke, can read her customers' minds. What would that be like? From there I thought, what kind of hero would have secrets so deep he couldn't let anyone know? And how would he keep those secrets from a mind reader? That's when I decided Haden needed to be paranormal in some way, so that his thoughts wouldn't reveal everything the minute he met Kitty.

HH: What do you like best about Haden?

SL: That he cooks for Kitty. That he's sexy and strong and chains himself to his weight set during the full moon.

HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

SL: I loved the fact that Kitty could experience Haden's erotic thoughts about her even before they did anything, but that was also the most complicated aspect of the story for me-keeping Haden's secrets hidden while in Kitty's point-of-view. I also loved writing in the little bits of humor in the story, like Kitty asking Haden if he likes dogs.

HH: What are you working on now?

SL: I've got three stories in the works: a futuristic set in the universe of The Men on Mars (Loose Id), a futuristic that focuses on magic set in Richmond, and a ghost hunting novel. I'm not sure which one I'll complete first.

HH: What do you have in store for readers in 2008?

SL: Blame It on the Moon releases Jan. 15th, 2008-so that's the first thing! Keep checking my News Page at www.sharalanel.com for my frequent giveaway contests. You'll also find the link to my monthly newsletter, blog, and myspace page.

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

SL: I've written since I could hold a pencil. I worked on the school paper and had a short story in the school literary magazine. Later, I studied film, art, and literature. After graduation, I worked at a magazine for a year and had a short story and a couple of articles published in it. But my focus really changed to romance when I discovered Virginia Romance Writers, and through them, Romance Writers of America. I've learned everything about the biz of writing from these organizations, and it was a friend in VRW who told me to submit to Liquid Silver Books, which resulted in my first published novel.

HH: How have things changed for you since then?

SL: I have more confidence in my work and in my ability to promote. I'd never dreamed I'd stand up in front of a group of people and speak, but I've done so now. I've signed in bookstores and pitched to editors and agents. I've even received fan emails from folks not related to me! Nothing beats that feeling when you've spent so many years writing in a vacuum. Wait, one thing does beat that feeling-and that's receiving the box filled with copies of my first novel, in print, with my name on the cover. That makes it all worthwhile!

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

SL: This year I want to produce more work, and it would be nice to make more on royalties than I spend on promotion. I'm hoping my last release, SECRETS & SPIES, will go into print. I'd also love to see my work sell to a larger (NY) publisher so that my books are nationally distributed in bookstores. And, ultimately, hitting that New York Times bestseller list would be mighty nice.

HH: What would you most like for readers to know about you?

SL: There are several great ways to get to know me, like signing up for my newsletter (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sharasezone/join), checking out my blog (http://sharalanel.wordpress.com/), or friending me on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/sharasezone). I love holding giveaway contests throughout the year, so keep an eye on my News Page at www.sharalanel.com for that information.

Thanks, TRS, for having me here!

HH: Thank you!
