Karen Wiesner

For the ten generations since the evil first came to Woodcutter's Grim, the Guardians have sworn an oath to protect the town from the childhood horrors that lurk in the black woods. Without them, the town would be defenseless... and the terrors would escape to the world at large.

The final in a four-book miniseries within the Woodcutter’s Grim Series, dealing with the curse on the Shaussegeny family. Very loosely based on Beauty and the Beast. The Shaussegeny family curse came with one final pronouncement: “And now there is but one manner in which this curse can be broken and obliterated entirely: That beauty falls in love with the beast and vice versa, that evil loves good and good loves evil. If this should happen, your family shall be released from each aspect of my curse and your alliance with evil shall be ended.”

When Ransom Shaussegeny attempts to cure the family of the curse they live under, he becomes a werewolf trapped in his beast form and isolates himself inside the family fortress. When he meets Tess Moore, a beautiful enchantress, and falls under her spell, Ransom no longer knows who or what is real -- or whether the evil in Woodcutter's Grim is about to have the last laugh by dooming him, the woman he loves, and his family for all time...

Reviews for Beauty is the Beast

5 Stars! “I admit that Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairy tale and Wiesner's story is loosely based on it; however, that is not why I am giving this story such a high rating. This story deserves every star. Instead of accepting his fate and grieving, this hero is trying hard to lift the curse or find a cure. As for the heroine, she is not perfect. Her secret is worse than his. I find that fact to be a refreshing change. It is a gentle twist to make the tale even more interesting. Karen Wiesner knows what readers want in their stories and she delivers.” ~Huntress Reviews http://www.huntressreviews.com

4.5 Stars! “Will Ransom be set free by science or magic? I’m glad Ransom finally got his own story. In the previous three stories in the anthology, he remained a bit of a mystery. I only knew that he was a scientist desperate to create a potion that would cure his family of the werewolf curse, and that he’s never left his family’s property for fear of contaminating anyone else, especially his chosen mate, with his curse. As I read, I discovered that Ransom is much more than a scientist. He’s a caring, sensitive man with amazing willpower. While the rest of his family embraces the curse of the werewolf, Ransom has been fighting it for over twenty years. It would have been so much easier for Ransom to embrace the curse, but he took the more difficult path. I admire his perseverance and dedication to his principles. When a strange man stumbles onto the Shaussegeny property, his situation bears an eerie resemblance to the tale of Beauty and the Beast. Since Ransom is such a scientific and logical person, I did find it a bit odd that he would suddenly decide to go where the magic was leading him. After all, he’d spent his whole life resisting the magic and evil that surrounded Woodcutter’s Grim. However, this led Ransom into the interesting predicament of having to acknowledge that science might not hold the key to everything after all. Tess brings out the best in Ransom. Though they met under less than ideal circumstances, they quickly begin to fall in love and have great chemistry. Like Ransom was at the beginning, Tess is very mysterious. The truth of her past isn’t revealed in full until the end of the story. I can’t give away any details without spoiling the ending. However, I will say that Tess’s history is a truly interesting twist that I didn’t expect. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Beauty is the Beast. Ransom’s happy ending with Tess is sweet and well deserved. Ms. Wiesner’s take on the classic fairytale was the perfect ending to this miniseries within the overall Woodcutter’s Grim Series. Anyone who enjoys fairy tales that are a little different should certainly read Beauty is the Beast as well as the other stories in the anthology.” ~Long and Short Reviews http://longandshortreviews.blogspot.com/2012/05/beauty-is-beast-by-karen-wiesner.html

4 Stars! “Beauty and the Beast with a new twist. I love fairy tales and I am always happy to check out new retellings and this one is definitely one of the best. I love the dark romance, and the twists and turns that are added into this story. Ransom brings some real depth to the beast character which I love because not all retellings of this story have very much depth to the beast's character. This story is so much more than a retelling though as it brings in a magic of its own and drew me in, keeping me glued to the pages for hours. I highly recommend Beauty is the Beast not only to fans of fairytales, but anyone who loves a good paranormal romance.” ~The Romance Reviews http://www.theromancereviews.com/viewbooksreview.php?bookid=4903

4 Stars! “I am generally not a fan of the destined to be together storyline. I understand the appeal: Having someone who loves you and will be with no matter what is a very nice thought, but from a writing perspective, it’s just lazy. Relationships take work, and not ever pair of people who find each other attractive are going to compatible in the long term. By skipping this process, the reader loses the chance to learn about the characters as they learn about each other. All that said, it works in this story. There is a reason for it. And I love the twist that comes from it. This twist is one of those I fear saying too much about, it is so good, so unexpected, that I in no way saw it coming or even came close to guessing what it might be. Overall, I recommend this book. It is a wonderful re-imagining to Beauty and the Beast and well worth adding to any collection.” ~Janelle for You Gotta Read Reviews http://yougottaread.com/beauty-is-the-beast/

4 Stars! “This is a novel where the characters have their problems. Everything can be worked out for the better. It ends up being an interesting and compelling retelling of a popular fairy tale.” ~Love Romance Passion http://www.loveromancepassion.com/review-beauty-is-the-beast-woodcutters-grim-series-book-7-by-karen-wiesner/

An Interview with Karen Wiesner
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Karen, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured release, “Beauty is the Beast”, Book 7 in the Woodcutter’s Grim Series. Where did you get the idea for this amazing series and why do you think it appeals to today’s audiences?

KW: Most of the novellas in the Woodcutter’s Grim Series are loosely based on popular, traditional fairy tales or poems. When I was putting together the first collection of Woodcutter’s Grim Series stories, I wrote a story based on the children’s poem The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse -- something I adored as a kid and also when my son was very young. The story didn’t work out at all like I planned, so I set aside, figuring I would brainstorm and try to come up with another angle for the story that I liked still and didn’t want to forget. Well, later, when I was trying to come up with my contributions for the 2011 Jewels of the Quill anthologies, I remembered this story. I’d always been intrigued by the Shaussegenys, who were mentioned in all of the previous Woodcutter’s Grim Series stories. There were hints that the family was made up of werewolves, and I really wanted to explore that angle and so came up with a four-book miniseries within the Woodcutter’s Grim Series, dealing with the curse on the Shaussegeny family. “Moonlight Becomes You” introduced the miniseries with the first son of Marnie and Gav Shaussegeny giving in to the curse... and infecting the woman he loves and their child with it. This story also introduced the growing conflicts between Marnie and Gav.

“Bewitched” continued the miniseries with Glynnis, the daughter of Marnie and Gav, and the mysterious new man who appeared across the lake. “The Little Mermaid” is one of my favorite fairy tales and so I knew I wanted to do a spin-off of it for my little horror town Woodcutter’s Grim. How to do it perplexed me for a long time because many of these stories are so loosely based on the fairy tale. It’s very difficult to fit a modern story into an older mold, so I don’t force it when it won’t go. For some reason, “Bewitched” perfectly fit into one aspect of the old tale and, after I realized that, the story pretty much wrote itself. It’s a fun, paranormal twist on a beloved story.

“One Night of Eternity” came next, featuring Marnie and Gav. I’ve always been intrigued by the children’s poem, The House That Jack Built, and when I started brainstorming on fairy tales that would make a good transition into my Woodcutter’s Grim Series, this intriguing, confusing poem was one of the first that I wanted to use. I came up with a simple, line-by-line outline of the story based on the poem, and the book really wrote itself after that. I just find it such a cool, circular idea that fit so well into the miniseries, as the situation was introduced in Book 4 and then touched on in Book 5. I especially enjoyed writing the story of a couple who endures marital infidelity and how this becomes so twisted in a paranormal situation like theirs. Their obsessive love for each other was obvious to me from their first moments thinking of each other.

Another huge fairy tale favorite of mine has always been Beauty and the Beast, and it was the obvious choice for the final story to wrap up this miniseries, “Beauty is the Beast”. The idea that the hero is trapped in his werewolf form was beyond compelling to me, mingled with a heroine who isn’t all that she seems. In that situation, who is the beauty and who is the beast? The story so perfectly brought this series full circle. It’s a favorite of mine now, as I hope it will be for readers.

HH:What do you like best about Tess and Ransom, the heroine and heroine, and why do you think readers will relate to them?

KW: Both are fighting against the roles they’ve been cast in against their wills. Ransom’s family has accepted the curse they live under, but he’s never been willing to. He wants to break the curse and he certainly doesn’t want to pass it on to a woman he’s falling in love with. But, for better or worse, Tess isn’t who she seems.

HH: What do you have coming up for lucky readers?

Return to Karen Wiesner’s award-winning Woodcutter’s Grim Series, where you first met and fell in love with this terrifying, magical town with its intriguing cast of characters, in an all new novel.

This story will fit into the Woodcutter’s Grim Series after THE DEEP, Book 8, and before “The Amethyst Tower”, the Final Chapter.

Very loosely based on “The Evil Mother-in-Law” by the Brothers Grimm

The year is 2040. When the evil in Woodcutter’s Grim unleashed ten years earlier, humans turned into spooks who avoided the sun and had a taste for human flesh... along with the innate instinct to contaminate others with their evil. In no time at all, the evil spread and wiped out half of the town’s population before the Protectorate -- the Guardians sworn to protect Woodcutter’s Grim and those outside against the evil pervading it -- came up with a way to hold the threat at bay, not completely but enough to save those left. In these years, everything has changed, from occupations to entertainment. A curfew has been imposed, and few are stupid enough to break it. Protectorate bounty hunters patrol the cities in the daylight. Humans live in fortress-like homes that aren’t always capable of keeping the ghouls out.

Guardian bounty hunter and ex-Marine, Reece Pallaton, wonders what it’s all for and whether he’ll lose everyone he cares about in this endless battle. Fellow Guardian, Michell “Shell” Jones insists that they can find a cure, that life will someday go back to normal. But Reece is beginning to believe that the battle he’s waging can never be won... until he discovers the source of the evil and his own, terrifying connection to it.
