Reviews for A Beautiful Experiment
"The plot is intriguing, and intensifies as the story evolves. It's not a quick read, but it's very entertaining and engaging. The more I read, the more involved I became in the adventure, mystery, excitement and romance. Valentine has put together a very creative and unusual paranormal romance. Much of the mystery resolves in book one, however, it's still a cliff hanger. A preview of book two is included at the end, which gives you an idea of what you're in store for. I fell in love this book, and can't wait for the next installments. I highly recommend this book to lovers of hot heroes, fangs and claws." by Jackie, 5 stars, Goodreads

An Interview with January Valentine
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: January, thank you for talking with us at TRS. You featured story is Beautiful Experiment, the first in a new trilogy. First, what can you tell us about the Island of Defiance Trilogy?
JV: The Island of Defiance Trilogy is a captivating paranormal/fantasy/romance series. The story takes place on a mysterious, paradisal island with only two permanent residents: a gorgeous seventeen-year-old boy named Brook, and his mentor, an ageless man called Father. Temporary residents are a group of troubled teens referred to as waywards, who are entrusted into Brook's care.
The first part of the story revolves around the plight the teens face while learning how they arrived on the island, and how to find their way home, while Brook learns how to control his paranormal gift, and accept his ultimate fate.
Will the teens be returned to the same world they were taken from? Will Brook be able to fulfill his destiny and save the world? Book one introduces readers to the characters, their personalities, backgrounds, and struggles. During a series of close encounters, Brook and the teens are stalked by demons.
In book two, Brook must conquer the demons who have grown stronger, and protect Gabriella who has become his reason to live. After frightening events, the deadly issues that develop on the island are resolved.
In Book three, Brook encounters an entirely different set of challenges when he faces the outside world. Can he assimilate with the humans in his new reality? Will he ever return to Defiance Island? Will he ever see Father again? Will there be a resurgence of demons?
HH: How does Beautiful Experiment kick off the story?
JV: While Brook and Father await a new arrival of waywards, Brook is overwhelmed by the sudden onset of his paranormal gift. While the sky turns into flame, Brook hears an eerie voice murmur, “When the third moon falls, the beast will devour the sky”, and is caught in a momentary firestorm. The episode leaves Brook shaken, and searching for answers. Father is evasive, leaving Brook to discover the nature of the island, and "the rules” on his own.
The waywards (six teens) claim to have been kidnapped on their way to a reform school in Louisiana. They arrive on the island without memory of their abductors or their voyage. Needless to say, they are angry, confused, frightened, and rebellious. The teens use verbal and physical altercations to vent their frustrations, while trying to cope with the reality of their nightmare scenario.
Chapin, the island diva, antagonizes good girl, Gabriella. Reese, the island bad boy, takes out his angst on Brook, and aspiring rock star, Albatross. Zac is the level-headed brawn and brains who hacks into computers. Katrina is the attractive redheaded peacemaker who is in for a surprise ... or two.
Adding to the mystery, the island is divided in half by a high stone wall. Brook has never seen the other side. In their quest for answers, Brook and the teens happen upon a shocking revelation: the world isn't what they always thought it was.
While Brook struggles to discover who he is, the voices he hears become more insistent, and lurking shadows that stalk him, materialize into demons he must fight to ultimately save the girl he loves... and the world.
HH: What can you tell us about your young heroes and heroines and why will we be cheering for them?
JV: Although he's never been off the island, Brook has traits and worldly desires of a normal teen ... along with otherworldly powers. He has no idea the island has plans for him, and that he might not be able to leave. He's strong, yet sensitive ... very passionate, and brave. He has lived a loveless life, until Gabriella comes along to show him life holds so much more than he has ever imagined.
Gabriella is an honors student who was on her way to "juvie" by mistake. She must learn how to toughen up and fight for herself while on the island. She goes from dreading her captivity, to not wanting to leave Brook when nearing her time for release. Brook must protect her purity, a virtue the demons covet.
HH: What can you tell us about the other two books?
JV: Gabriella has been kidnapped twice! In Book Two, Brook rescues her and they finally reach the other side of the island, where they encounter greater mystery and evil than they left behind. Brook is in for the shock of his life when he runs into the residents on the other side. Gabriella's shock occurs when she walks into the laboratory.
In Book Three, the teens are back in the USA, where Brook will try to assimilate, and decide whether or not to return to the Island of Defiance. Will he have a choice?
HH: What do you think readers will enjoy most about this trilogy?
JV: The mystery, excitement and adventure should please lovers of paranormal romance and fantasy. The attraction and sensual tension between Brook and Gabriella is enchanting and habit-forming. Readers will more than likely form a love/hate relationship with certain characters, and will want to see them either brought down or attain their emotional transformation. For those who like conflict, turmoil is provided by the unpredictable waywards. The demons add supernatural thrills, horror and suspense. Be it obnoxious teens or blood-curdling demons, there's never a dull moment on the Island of Defiance.
The plot is symbolic of some of the problems that plague the world today.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
JV: I’m also working on Bad Dreams, book three of my Dream series, which includes Love Dreams contemporary romance, and Sweet Dreams in the Mind of a Serial Killer.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish in your writing career this year?
JV: I would like to finish Island of Defiance Trilogy, and Bad Dreams by the end of this year. I would also like to write prequels for the teens of the Defiance Trilogy, detailing their lives prior to their abduction, beginning with Reese. He is a strong and exciting character who could easily carry his own book.
HH: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of writing?
JV: I publish books for other authors through Water Forest Press, which I founded some years ago. In the past, I have written poetry and song lyrics, but now I focus on fiction. I've created multiple websites and blogs that I don't have time to manage very well.
My desire to be in a rock band brought me into a recording studio ... where my lyrics sprang to life with the help of a local alternative rock band. Together, we produced a CD.
I enjoy designing book covers and youtube videos. In summer, I enjoy hiking and swimming. I love all kinds of music. Watching horror flicks and Tyler Perry movies are my escape from reality.
I have an addiction to engraved pens that I buy to accompany each of my books. My office is filled with paperbacks and swag.
HH: What’s your favorite quote ever?
JV: “Life is a book. We fill the pages.”
HH: What’s your favorite social media venue and how do you use it to let readers know about your books?
JV: My favorite social media venues are: Facebook, Goodreads, and my blogtalkradio show: Away With Words, where I interview authors, and discuss books and writing. My show airs every Wednesday evening at 7 PM EST, USA. I love meeting and speaking to creative talents from the USA and other parts of the world. It’s a fun show, and do we have a blast :-)
HH: Thank you!
