But under Saloman's regime, vampires have become less concerned with secrecy, no longer willing to hide their power. Rumors are swirling about attacks on humans. After Saloman joins forces with the vampire hunters to consolidate his power, Elizabeth begins to understand her role in the inevitable collision of the two worlds. An Interview with Marie Treanor
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Marie, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is The Blood Eternal and is the third in your Awakened by Blood series. Where did the idea for this sizzling paranormal series come from? MT: Thanks for having me, Holly -- it's great to be back! I think the idea had been growing for a long time. I grew up loving gothic horror and gothic romance in both books and films, from Jane Eyre to Dracula and Hammer Horror =). So it was on my mind to write a vampire series with a dark, dangerous vampire hero. Then one day a vision popped into my head of a stone carving rising up and advancing upon a terrified woman through a cloud of dust and rubble. That became the awakening scene in Blood on Silk =).
HH: How did the first two stories kick it off? MT: Well, Elizabeth Silk, my academic heroine who's busting vampire myths by painstaking research, accidentally awakens the most powerful vampire of all time -- Saloman -- and enters a dangerous and frequently sexy game of wits with him, each seeking to kill the other. Neither succeeds, because as well as sexual attraction, inconvenient love springs up between them. Saloman is out for revenge on those who betrayed and staked him three hundred years ago, followed by world domination. Elizabeth is torn between her friendship with the vampire hunters who helped her survive in the lethal new world she'd stumbled into, and her growing passion for Saloman. She tries to do the right thing, and opposes Saloman's tyrannical ambitions. But in spite of everything against it, their relationship grows.
HH: How does Blood Eternal continue it? MT: Things are changing in Blood Eternal. Because of Saloman, the vampires are beginning to emerge from the shadows. At the same time, vampire revolts against him are causing violence and chaos that the hunters have difficulty covering up. So the secret of vampire existence is beginning to unravel. To make matters worse, Senator Dante, the villain of Blood Sin, has found the means to awaken another Ancient vampire, Saloman's once beloved, insane cousin Luk, whom Saloman staked back in the seventeenth century. Luk knows Saloman very well and uses all his secret vulnerabilities against him – including Elizabeth. Both have to confront their fears and their pasts in order to resolve their future.
HH: How has Elizabeth evolved over the course of these three stories? MT: Elizabeth has grown hugely in confidence since the beginning of Blood on Silk. She's learned to trust her own judgment in matters unconcerned with academia, and to look after herself physically. She no longer backs down from necessary confrontations, and with her Awakener's powers, she's aware she can kick the ass of most beings in existence, maybe even that of Saloman himself. She's also discovered psychic abilities that allow her to talk telepathically to Saloman, and she's built on those. No one knows how far she'll go in that direction…
HH: What can readers look forward to from Saloman this time around? MT: They'll learn a bit more about his thoughts and finer feelings, what motivates him and how deep his feelings for Elizabeth really go. His secret vulnerability is also revealed. Of course, he hasn't turned into a wimp =). He's still plotting and kicking ass with supreme sang-froid.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? MT: I'm working on a couple of new projects: another vampire story, very different from the Awakened by Blood trilogy; and a kind of post-apocalyptic ghost story.
HH: How much of your day is devoted to your writing career? MT: Most of it, really! Unless something else important turns up, like school holidays =). I do a bit of work early in the morning before everyone has to get up. Then after taking my daughter to school, I work right through until I have to collect her again at three o'clock. I usually manage to get an extra half hour or so in after that, and in the evening I do a bit of emailing etc.
HH: What are you reading at the moment? MT: A rather interesting werewolf romance by Summer Devon and Linda Gayle -- Claws on Silk.
HH: Where is your favorite place to shop for books? MT: I used to haunt a couple of big bookshops in Edinburgh, plus a couple of treasure-trove second-hand shops, but nowadays it's usually Amazon! It's so much simpler, although I do miss pouring over the actual books so often…
HH: Any special plans for the holidays this year? MT: You mean Christmas? Not yet! I can’t think about the “C” word until after Number 2 Son’s birthday at the end of November =). We usually have family to stay over Christmas and New year, though, and I imagine this year will be no different. Last year, we were going to have a big Christmas dinner party for friends, only we had to cancel because unexpected snow cut our village off from the rest of the world at exactly the wrong time, so it might be fun to do it this year instead!
HH: Thank you!
