About Laura Sheehan
Laura grew up in Las Vegas and has been dancing since she was a kid. Her ballet mistress was an honest-to-goodness Las Vegas showgirl! She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, a thoroughly-spoiled cat, and a handful of fish who keep her thoroughly-spoiled cat entertained. When not working at her office day job, she can usually be found in a dance studio, on a softball field, or curled up on the couch with a romance novel.
An Interview with Laura Sheehan
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Laura, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Dancing With Danger. Where did the idea for this sizzling story originate?
LS: I had a dream that I was dancing at a strip club to make extra money. But in order to keep my identity secret, I wore a half-mask, Zorro-style. I woke up the next morning thinking about the dream (and somewhat considering a career-change), and the image just sort of stuck with me. I started wondering about the type of woman who would strip at a topless nightclub, and what her story might be... and the next thing I knew, I had the beginnings of a hot romantic suspense!
HH: What can you tell us about Lily and why will readers relate to her?
LS: When Lily dances, she is able to let go of her controlling nature and get swept up in the moment. She is incredibly passionate when she dances, and yet off-stage, she's never truly let herself go. She's incredibly capable and independent, and has made huge sacrifices to achieve her dream of becoming a dancer. But when she meets Marc, she has to learn to let down her barriers, to allow herself to rely on him through some tough/scary situations, and to let him show her how passionate she can be even when she isn't performing.
HH: What can you tell us about Marc and why will readers love him?
LS: Marc is a tough, yet charming, LAPD officer. His parents divorced a few years ago after over twenty years of a happy marriage, and he's now hesitant to believe in the concept of true, lasting love. His career is incredibly important to him, and he isn't sure if he could ever fall in love with a woman for fear that she won't understand that his career is a part of who he is. So he's taken aback when he meets Lily and is overwhelmed by protective urges and scorching-hot attraction. How can one, tiny woman throw his world upside-down in just a few short weeks?
HH: What makes your story stand out in today's market?
LS: There are plenty of romantic supsenses out there starring hot, sexy police officers (what can I say? I'm a sucker for a man in uniform). But I really enjoyed writing about Lily's career as a professional dancer. Having done a bit of professional dancing in real life, it was fun to write about it. Describing choreography in a way so that even non-dancer readers could understand and appreciate the dance was a creative challenge, and I loved it. Writing about the small things that seem everyday to me, but might be foreign to those who aren't performers (like warming up, backstage dressing rooms, etc.) was also a fun experience. I also really strive to make my characters and their dialogue (both internal or verbal) realistic. I think both Marc and Lily come across as believable characters, with an incredible story filled with sexual attraction, danger, and emotional satisfaction.
HH: What was your favorite part of writing this emotionally-charged tale?
LS: I already spoke about how much I loved writing the dancing sequences, but I have to admit, I also loved writing about the Bad Guy. I remember writing a particular scene from his perspective, and literally getting chills as the words poured out of my imagination and onto the computer screen. It's not often that you get to creep yourself out so thoroughly! I also have to admit that writing the sex scenes was incredibly enjoyable. A girl's gotta do her research properly, yes? ;-)
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
LS: I am working on two short stories at the moment, one of which I am hoping to submit to the Los Angeles Romance Author's anthology FIVE-MINUTE LOVE STORIES. I am also knee-deep in a new novel-length romance, this one is a fantasy and I am hoping to have it completed sometime in the next year.
HH: Where can readers find all of your works?
LS: You can purchase DANCING WITH DANGER on Amazon, B&N.com, or at the Red Sage website. You can also find me (and samples of some of my other works) at my website/blog: www.ReadLaura.com.
HH: What would we find in your to-be-read pile?
LS: My TBR pile is so big, it's getting out of hand. I'm a fan of romantic suspense, fantasy, and contemporary romance with a humorous twist. Currently sitting on my bookshelf and in my Kindle carousel are: Second Sight (by Amanda Quick), Tricked - The Iron Druid Chronicles (by Kevin Hearne), and An Indiscretion (by Lynne Marshall), amongst many, many others!
HH: What in person or online appearances will you be making this year?
LS: I have several guest blog appearances this year, check out my website for more details!
HH: When you're not reading or promoting you like to __________?
LS: Perform! I'm currently in rehearsals for a production of Gershwin's "Crazy for You," which opens at the end of June for a six-week run in Santa Monica. I also enjoy playing softball, seeing movies, and spending time with my amazing husband.
Thank you so much for having me here at The Romance Studio!
HH: Thank you!
