Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy

Death brings would-be country singer Tessa Owens home from Nashville to her native Ozarks. But she’s not planning to stay. She turned her back on the old ways of life in the modern world long ago. But she didn’t expect to meet her first love, Lucas Rowlands, at the visitation. Seven years wasn’t long enough to forget him and sparks ignite when they meet again. Even worse, Tessa learns Lucas isn’t the simple country farmer she left behind but the sin eater, an ancient position handed down to him from his grandfather. She still plans to make tracks back to Music City USA but when Lucas falls ill, Tessa can’t bear to leave. As she struggles to understand Lucas’ life and role as a sin eater, Tessa admits she loves him and there’s no doubt what he feels for her. But even if she’ll give up her country music dreams, there’s no way Tessa can become the sin eater’s wife, especially not when Lucas knows he won’t make old bones. The devil wants Lucas’ sin-heavy soul and if they don’t come up with something, Lucas is hell bound on an express ticket. If there’s any chance at a future, it’s up to Tessa.

An Interview with Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Lee Ann, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is The Sin Eater’s Redemption and is quite an unusual tale. What can you tell us about this special story and where you got the idea for it?

LA: The sin eater is an ancient custom in the British Isles, especially in Wales. I have some Welsh ancestry and the idea of someone who consumes food to represent sin at a funeral always fascinated me. It's not very commonly known, though, and I came up with the idea of a sin eater in modern times. And since I write romance, I thought why not make it a major stumbling block between a couple and their happily ever after!

HH: What do you like best about Tessa and why will readers be cheering for her?

LA: She's plucky and very strong, probably more than she realizes. When it comes to Lucas, she's loyal and refuses to give up.

HH: What do you like best about Lucas and why will readers love him?

LA: Lucas is your average country guy except for the fact he's the sin eater. So he's torn and tortured. I think readers will want him to find a way out as much as Tessa does.

HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

LA: It's set in the Ozarks where I live and I love describing the area to readers who aren't familiar with it. It's a beautiful place with a lot of history and old fashioned ways yet it's also moving into the 21st century. The blending of past and present is awesome.

HH: What makes this different from other books you’ve written?

LA: It has a little bit more of a supernatural element, not ghosts or things that go bump in the night or vampires (like in some of my other works) but an age old struggle between good and evil. The Devil is very real to Lucas and a force to be reckoned with.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

LA: I have my first interracial romance coming out July 3 from Rebel Ink Press, PINK NEON. My heroine is a sassy African American gal from Chicago who comes to Branson to start a new life after a divorce. When her ex is murdered, she falls under suspicion but the FBI agent sent to investiage her, Daniel Padilla, is attracted to her from the first meeting.

HH: What do you enjoy most about being an author?

LA: I love creating stories and sharing them with readers. Connecting with readers is a wonderful thing and I love to hear from readers my words have touched.

HH: How has your writing career changed since you started out?

LA: When I began, I wrote short fiction and a lot of non-fiction. My dream was always to write longer fiction and novels. Now that I've made the leap, it's something I love.

HH: What do you think has been the most positive change?

LA: Learning that I can write novels readers enjoy reading and learning. Every set of edits teaches me new ways to tighten and hone my writing skills.

HH: Where can readers find you online?
