About Allie Boniface

Allie was born and raised in a very small town in upstate New York, which probably explains her fascination with the magic of small town life. She spent most of her youth reading anything and everything she could get her hands on, and it was only a matter of time before she began writing as well.

Allie holds degrees from the University of Rochester (NY) and Case Western Reserve University (OH). She currently lives in the northern NYC suburbs, where she teaches English and Education full-time to high school students. She is a member of RWA, both the national and her local chapters, and has published novels with Samhain Publishing and The Wild Rose Press. She has also authored many articles on the craft of writing and appears as a regular freelance author for WOW - Women-on-Writing's ezine (www.wow-womenonwriting.com).

An Interview with Allie Boniface
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Allie, welcome to TRS! Please tell us about your featured book, Lost in Paradise.

AB: Lost in Paradise is the story of Ashton and Eddie, who meet as housemates in a small town in New Hampshire, when Ash moves from Boston to get away from the rest of her life. She deliberately lies about who she is, which is fine until she discovers that Eddie is the one person she doesn't want to lie to. This book was a labor of love for me, because it's the very first novel I ever wrote. It wasn't the first one I sold, though - it was actually the third. After it was passed over by agents and editors, I put it away for a few years. I pulled it out last summer and did major revisions to the storyline. Interestingly, I didn't change very much about the main characters. They were always fully formed, from the earliest days.

HH: Your heroine is in a new place to escape scandal and your hero is eligible and interested. Where did you get the idea for this wonderful story?

AB: Anyone who visits my website and reads my Bio will find that I love the magic and intimacy of small towns. That's where this story began. I knew I needed to get Ashton and Eddie together, but I had a difficult time figuring out the circumstances, at first. I spent about a week playing the "what if" game inside my head, because I needed a situation drastic enough to drive a well-adjusted woman into hiding. The idea of a family scandal linked to politics wasn't a far reach, considering the headlines in today's newspapers. After a few days of working through ideas in my mind, the details just sort of fell into place.

HH: What do you like best about Eddie West?

AB: Oh, Eddie…he is my favorite hero, out of all the romance novels I've written. Eddie is loosely based on a good friend of mine, and our friendship actually became the seed for the love relationship in this story (though we were never romantically linked in real life!). Eddie is strong and sexy, but he's vulnerable both physically, as we see through his facial scars, and emotionally, through the devastating loss he's suffered. He's complex and lovable. Everyone who read the early drafts of this story loved Eddie, no question.

HH: What did enjoy most about this story?

AB: Once I decided how the story needed to progress, the words came almost without a hitch. Hands down, it was the easiest and fastest novel I have written, to date.

HH: What are you working on now?

AB: I have another novel in draft stage, titled Summer's Song, about a woman who goes home for the first time in 10 years to face down the demons from her past. I really love this novel and would like nothing more than to find a publisher for it in 2008.

HH: What else do you have in store for readers in 2008?

AB: Well, I'm thrilled that both Lost in Paradise, published with The Wild Rose Press, and One Night in Boston, published with Samhain Publishing, will be released in print in May. I also just signed a second contract with Samhain, for a contemporary romance titled One Night in Memphis. I'm hoping that novel will see e-publication later this year.

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

AB: I always dabbled in creative writing, since I was a child. I used to write stories in math class! But it wasn't until 2001, after September 11, that I realized I needed to pursue this passion. I joined an online writers' group and was lucky enough to find some wonderful fellow writers who support me and my writing to this day.

HH: How have things changed for you since then?

AB: Well, most significantly, I've gone from being an aspiring, unpublished writer to a published novelist, which has literally been a dream come true. I have to admit that signing a publishing contract, going through the process of editing, and finally seeing my name on a book cover, has been an overwhelming experience. I've also learned that there is so much about the book publishing and marketing business that I still don't know!

HH: What do you enjoy reading?

AB: I have a wide range when it comes to my taste in authors. I enjoy literary and women's fiction (Jodi Picoult is one of my current favorites), though I'm also a fan of classic authors (like Jane Austen and William Shakspeare). On any given day, I might pick up the latest Stephen King horror story, a Jennifer Crusie comedy, or a Tori Phillips historical romance. Mostly, I like someone who can tell a good story.

HH: What you would most like for readers to know about you?

AB: That being an author is just one of the hats I wear. I also teach high school English; I clean litter boxes at the local animal sanctuary; I help my husband refinish closets and install insulation in our house; I run 5K and 10K road races and finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. Writing is a passion that enriches my life when added to everything else I am fortunate enough to experience!

HH: Thank you!
