Marie Treanor

Love, lust, and revenge, woven through the twisted chaos of time...

Fighting for her life in Edinburgh's dark, dangerous streets, Miri stabs the wrong man -- and ends up in his arms, sparking a sequence of events that alters history, with catastrophic consequences.

Order today from Changeling Press

Wrongfully exiled from his own dimension, Caratacus is determined to find a way home. But that's going to be difficult using only nineteenth century steam technology -- even more difficult when distracted by the sort of steam he creates with Miri!

Before he can go home, he has to set things right. That means hunting down a Jack the Ripper copycat, prevent Robert Louis Stevenson from becoming an engineer, and help a brutal, game-playing civilization protect itself from cannibals -- all without destroying the intense but fragile love he's found with Miri.

After that, reversing time should be easy.

An Interview with Marie Treanor
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Marie, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, Steamy Nights.

MT: It’s my pleasure, Holly – great to be back =) Steamy Nights is a mixture of erotic dark fantasy and time travel, with an unusual romance. . My hero, Caratacus, comes from a race of inter-dimensional travellers - who’ve exiled him to 1860s Scotland for opposing their corrupt ruling regime. In Edinburgh, he thinks only of finding a way home and taking his revenge, and he’s almost there when he meets Miri, a poor Edinburgh prostitute who forces him to pay attention to the crimes being committed in the city. However Caratacus’s solution is almost as dangerous as doing nothing! Especially when he recognizes the culprit as his old enemy. From there, his and Miri’s adventures grow increasingly bizarre as they realize they’re altering history. The trouble is, putting things right time-wise could wipe out all memory of their passionate love affair.

HH: This story reminds me a little of a Jack the Ripper tale set in Scotland. <g> Where did you get the idea for this fascinating tale?

MT: Yes, the beginning does resemble the Jack the Ripper story! I suppose I was influenced by that and by the more local tales of Burke and Hare the body-snatchers. I love the atmosphere of Edinburgh’s old town and it’s very easy to think yourself back there in the days of smoke and pollution and fog, and imagine all sorts of skulduggery =)

HH: The cyber-punk and steam-punk stories are quite popular these days. What drew you to try this growing genre?

MT: I think because I’ve always enjoyed reading them and watching that style of film. I love the whole atmosphere, the mixture of threat and chaos and the eccentric genius.

HH: What challenges do you face in introducing characters from different dimensions?

MT: Mainly, I suppose, giving them a believable world. In this case, we don’t get to see much of it. But there are glimpses of a technologically advanced people who look and talk like us, and could even be us in a few centuries. But the time anomalies had me – and my editor and several proof-readers! – tearing our hair out to make sure we’d got it right. I felt as if my brain was in knots by the end, but hopefully it all reads perfectly smoothly and blends into the rest of the story =)

HH: What are you working on at the moment?

MT: I’m working on an exciting new project with another author. I hope to be able to say more about it soon, but we should be producing a joint story that is hot, funny and great fun =)

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

MT: I’m lucky enough to have two releases this month! As well as Steamy Nights at Changeling, Queen’s Gambit comes out at Samhain – also on 6th March! Queen’s Gambit is a re-release of my first ever published romance, all about a sexy chess player, a cursed thirteenth century lady and an enchanted chess set…

Then in May comes the print release of Gothic Dragon at Samhain, which I’m very excited about, and in June a quirky new ghost story called Requiem for Rab, also from Samhain.

HH: What would you most like to accomplish in your writing career this year?

MT: Big things =) I’m expanding this year!As well as my books with Changeling and Samhain, I’ll have with two books coming out at The Wild Rose Press, and my first contract at Ellora’s Cave. Together with my print release, I’m hoping this will spread my name a lot farther. But mostly, I want to keep writing stories that people are eager to read and enjoy.

HH: Will you be attending any upcoming conventions or events this year?

MT: I have no plans to. Most of them seem to happen in America which is just a little too far for me – I’m in Scotland! I did go to the Booklovers Convention in Germany a couple of years ago, which was great fun, but unfortunately they’ve stopped doing that one.

HH: If you weren't a writer, what do you think you'd be doing?

MT: I’d probably still be a librarian. I love books, but I find I like writing them more than organizing them =)

Thanks for having me!

HH: Thank you!
