An Interview with Cherie Amour
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Cherie, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured work, Duel of Souls.
CA: Thanks for interviewing me. It's a thrill to do. =)
I'm a big fan of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. And as in Dante's epic fantasy poem, I wanted to create a world where Heaven and Hell aren't what we imagine them to be. I wanted to make them a fusion of mixed characters who weren't completely good or evil and who weren't easily labelled or understood. Complexity brings depth to the characters and entertainment for the reader.
HH: A beautiful demon, her lover, Christopher Columbus, an angel... Where did you get the idea for this sizzling tale? CA: Sebastian was the first character I created. The other characters were born in my mind to complement him. And Christopher Columbus, I felt, would be the best historical figure to add to the brew that could help bring Sebastian and the other characters together into the story.
HH: How did you approach world building for this project? CA: I created Hell first and again it was made to complement Sebastian. I asked myself what type of Hell could I create that would bring out the most of this demon hero's potential. Sebastian is my favorite character ever and the most complicated I have created. In Duel of Souls, the reader sees only the first layer to his persona. Considering he's centuries old and was once Satan's right hand, he has far more layers than were revealed in the first story. In Book 2, I explore these layers further. Some of his traits will endear him further to the reader and make him ultimately irresistible to the heroine.
Heaven was briefly developed in Book 1 to complement Amato. I'll most probably develop it more in a later story.
HH: What do you like best about Belinda and how do you relate to her? CA: What I love about Belinda is that although she is a tough demon, she has a soft heart. Sebastian and the reader are the only ones who see this soft side right from the start. Then of course Amato sees it as well, which is one of the reasons he falls in love with her.
I don't relate much with her. To tell you the truth, I relate more with my heroes. I am a real tomboy. Growing up, I hung around with male friends. And although that changed some in college and after that, I find I still have more common interests with males than females. You could say I think more like a male than a female, thus I have an easier time creating my heroes than my heroines.
I relate with Sebastian in a sense that my brain is always churning/worrying. I'm always trying to solve problems or enigmas. Of course, I'm not quite good at problem solving or uncovering enigmas. More often than not, I come to the completely wrong conclusion.
But that's the beauty about being a writer. I can make my characters as perfect as I want. And I want Sebastian to be great at it. He'll see the truth in the deepest secret and will come up with the best solution to bring about a happily ever after for the heroes and heroines in the stories.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers, Cherie? CA: Book 2 A Queen's Enchantment will involve Sebastian, of course. He'll be sent on an impossible mission to steal a queen's soul. The problem is she is almost if not more cunning and devious than he. And when his sexual attraction for her turns to something more complicated and wrenches at his heart, the conditions get a whole lot more complicated.
To add another volatile ingredient to the story, a formidable enemy demon from Sebastian's past comes in search of him in this mission seeking revenge. He knows something about Sebastian that no one else knows. This something is one of Sebastian's biggest weaknesses.
Sebastian soon finds out that not only is his mission of stealing the queen's soul at jeopardy, but Heaven, Hell, and Earth and their inhabitants are as well.
HH: How did you get your start as a writer? CA: I've wanted to be a writer ever since I was a child. I wrote my first romantic suspense/mystery novel when I was 15. But I figured I couldn't make a living writing and decided to follow a practical profession in business. A few years ago, I decided to get back to my roots and started taking writing courses and writing again.
HH: What can you tell us about making that first sale? CA: I called my husband at work when I got the acceptance letter from Siren Publishing for Let's Get Physical. I was all excited and my husband, the calm, collect Capricorn that he is said nothing while I rambled on and giggled about how excited I was with the acceptance.
My hubby is not a big phone conversationalist and only said, "That's good news!" when I was done and then let me go.
Of course at night we celebrated with a French vanilla coffee and my favourite chocolate he surprised me with after work.
It was wonderful to get that acceptance and have him support me in my writing career.
HH: How have things changed for you since then? CA: Let's Get Physical got great reviews and sales have been pretty good for it. Since that story came out, I've had three other titles published. I'm writing the second story in the Unworldly Sexual Encounters series A Queen's Enchantment, and Lust and the Muse and Passionate Deal, two separate contemporary romance novellas.
HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career? CA: I want to try to have a story come out about every four months. At one point or other, I want to write a novel rather than a novella--a romantic suspense/mystery that I've been rolling around in my mind for a few months.
HH: What would you consider a perfect day? CA: When I wake up fully energized and light hearted. The sun is shining and I can sit back in my armchair with my laptop and write in peace drinking one of my teas or flavoured coffees while listening to moving music that soothes my romantic soul. And the story then just writes itself as my hands are the conduit for my musing mind.
HH: Thank you!
