An Interview with Jessica E. Subject
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Jessica, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Made For Her and features two very special characters who've endured so much. Where did you get the idea for this unique and sizzling story?
JS: Thank you for having me! It's always a pleasure to be at The Romance Studio. In many of my stories, I have sexy aliens, but I wanted to try some other sci-fi aspect. The first thing that came to mind was the idea of cloning. And when I think of human clones, I always recall the character "Cooper Hawkes" from Space: Above and Beyond, a clone who fights in the AI wars. But I didn't want the same story line. I knew if humans were cloned, there had to be a good reason. In the case of Made For Her, they are created to fill in for the lack of recruits in the future military.
HH: What do you like best about Mikayla and why will readers empathize with her?
JS: Mikayla, even after the tragic death of her husband, is a strong woman, and continues to train the clones he helped to create. She is continuing his dream no matter what actions rebel groups may take.
HH: What do you like best about Dare and why will readers love him?
JS: Dare is a strong-willed man. Once he sets his mind to something, he doesn't stop until he achieves it. He was the first "Daniel" clone to leave the laboratory, and now he's training to be "the best" space pilot. That is, if he can convince Mikayla to train him.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story and what do you think readers will take away from it?
JS: This story involved a lot of firsts for me that involved tons of research. And I love constantly learning. With the flight simulator scene, I had a pilot help me write it, and much of my research involving cloning is reflected in the story. Plus, both characters were so much fun to write.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
JS:
On the same day Made For Her released, I had another book release. Accidental Romance is a new adult contemporary western romance that is part of Decadent Publishing's new The Challenge series. I have another 1Night Stand story coming soon to Decadent Publishing called Another Night, Another Planet. This story is also part of their Elatia line, bringing the two lines together in one story. I have the first book in my new Alien Next Door series with my editor right now, and I'm writing Never Gonna Desert You, which is the sequel to my sci-fi/dystopian story, Never Gonna Let You Go.
HH: How does 2013 promise to be different from 2012 for you?
JS: I have a lot of projects I want to complete this year. In 2012, I released a lot of first stories in series, but this year, I plan to write the sequels. And I'll have some stand alones as well. I'm going to continue working with my publisher, but I'm going to try some new avenues as well.
HH: Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
JS: Oh, I find inspiration everywhere. Sometimes it can be a conversation with a friend, something I see on television, a news article, anything. I'm never short on ideas. I have a full idea folder. I just need time to write all of the stories.
HH: What's your writing schedule like?
JS: My writing schedule varies from day-to-day, depending on my other job, and whether or not I've had a recent release. I try to get a couple of items crossed off my to-do list every day before writing, so those items aren't haunting me while I'm trying to write.
HH: What's your favorite way to interact with readers?
JS: I love receiving e-mails from my readers, and I also enjoy chatting on twitter @jsubject. I don't live in the United States, so I can't get to the conferences as easily, but I hope to in the future.
HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
JS: I'm looking forward to meeting more readers and authors in my area, and meeting new people as well. I'm also excited about the new projects I'm working on this year.
Thank you very much!
HH: Thank you!
