An Interview with Lacey Savage
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio
HH: Lacey, welcome back to TRS BLUE. Please tell us about your featured work, I, Nefertiti.LS: Thanks so much for having me, Holly. I'm delighted to be back.
I, NEFERTITI is the story of a popular actress who's visited by a dream lover every night. Haunted by his presence in her dreams, she searches for his identity -- and eventually learns he's Akhenaten, a Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt who's been dead for 3,000 years. She also discovers that his tomb has just been unearthed. All she wants is some peace of mind, so she leaves the set of her latest movie and heads for Egypt, hoping to get a glimpse of the relics. She's not sure what she'll find, but she certainly doesn't expect to stumble through a portal to the past... and land in Nefertiti's body.
I, NEFERTITI was originally published by Loose Id, but has been extensively revised and lengthened for Ellora's Cave. The book also won the 2006 EPPIE award for Best Paranormal Erotic Romance.
HH: You must be so proud of this work that has won awards and received critical acclaim. Where did you get the idea for this amazing story? LS: I'm delighted with the response the book has received, both from readers and from critics, especially since it was my first full-length novel -- and only the second book I'd ever written. I started working on it in 2003. I was working in a bookstore at the time, and in my usual daily aimless browsing (my husband calls this routine "fondling the books", which I still do on a regular basis) I stumbled upon a huge encyclopedia of mythology. It included myths from all over the world, in very pretty, glossy format, with lots of great images. I spent much more money on it than I should have considering my earning potential at the time, but I brought it home and remained glued to it for days.
In the entire 700-page encyclopedia, there was only one tiny mention of Nefertiti and Akhenaten, in regards to Akhenaten's worship of the sun god, Aten. Well, one mention was all it took. I immediately thought... what if a woman from the 20th century fell through a portal and landed in Ancient Egypt -- and into Nefertiti's body?
The full story developed over a period of about a year, during which I researched Egyptian history, culture, beliefs, religion... you name it. I agonized over the submission process because I took quite a few liberties with the actual historical facts. My story is fiction inspired by real characters, and I wasn't sure how well that would go over. Luckily, my Ellora's Cave editor was as excited about the story as I was, and she waited for it for years. =)
HH: I, Nefertiti is now released from Ellora’s Cave. Are there any changes in this new release? LS: Yes, quite a few! The sex scenes have all been greatly expanded, as has the historical context of the novel. I think the book has much greater depth now, allowing the reader to experience Ancient Egypt in its exquisite, sensual glory.
HH: Will there be any sequels to this masterful work? LS: A sequel to I, NEFERTITI was released from Loose Id in 2006. Although it received great reviews and reader feedback, I feel it needs a lot of work before it'll be up to my current standards. I haven't yet decided whether I'll be rewriting and submitting the book to Ellora's Cave. At this point, I think that will be up to readers.
HH: What did you like best about Nell Winters? LS: I loved her spunk, her guts, her determination. She's not afraid to go after what she wants, no matter how crazy it might seem to others. She's independent, yet she'll let Akhenaten take control when he needs to. Oddly enough, those are the same qualities Akhenaten most loves about her, too.
HH: Lacey, you’re a prolific, successful author. You’re required to write a good story. Outside of the writing, what’s the most important thing you do as an author?
LS: Read. There's no question about it -- if I don't read, I can't write. I need to feel the cadence of words rolling through my mind, to taste the way they're put together on my tongue (yes, I read aloud quite often to get a real understanding for the rhythm of sentences), to learn from other authors' experiences. My TBR shelf is up to 2,000 paperbacks. If it dips below that number, I panic and have to buy more. Most people would think that's obsessive-compulsive behavior. I call it a basic need.
HH: How do you balance writing with the rest of your life?
LS: Ah, well, that's an ongoing struggle for me. I'm the queen of procrastination, yet I find that if I don't write, I get grumpy. I usually write when my husband's not around, since I prefer to spend all my free time with him if he's at home. But since his demanding job often keeps him away for longer than either one of us would like, I let my characters entertain me until he returns.
HH: What do you enjoy reading for yourself?
LS: I love genre fiction: romance (of course!) in all its wonderful sub-genres, but also fantasy (my first love, really), science fiction, mysteries, and even the occasional horror novel. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in English, the only genre I won't read is "literary" fiction. I paid my dues in University. The day I graduated, I vowed I would never read anything I don't enjoy again.
HH: What else can readers look forward to from you this year? LS: In June, I'm launching a new werewolf series a Ellora's Cave. The first book is titled DIVA IN DENIAL, and it's a steamy older woman / younger werewolf tale.
I also have a real fondness for Amber Quill Press's "Amber Pax" multi-author themes. I've signed up to write quite a few of those, so readers can expect at least a book every couple of months starting in August.
In addition to those projects, I'll be writing at least a couple of novellas for Changeling press and continuing to create more steamy, naughty stories for Ellora's Cave.
I'm extremely excited to be launching a new website this year, and a new pen name. Look for Hunter Raines to make her debut in M/M erotic romance later this year.
HH: Any vacation plans this year? LS: My husband and I vacation in Mexico each January to celebrate our anniversary. Since we've already taken our vacation in 2008, I can't help but look forward to next year's trip. We'll be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary, so I expect it will be extra special. =)
HH: Thank you!
