An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio
HH: B.J., welcome to TRS BLUE! Please tell us about your featured work, Lycaon Moon.BJ: Veda Pearl has left the pack, by choice. She’s a bounty hunter with an attitude. She lives a solitary life in the city and satisfies her physical needs with unsuspecting humans. No one tells Veda what to do.
Kane Ryland is a wolf with a purpose. After a three-year absence, Kane returns to the pack that banished him. He’s ready to start his own pack in Alaska and he wants Veda to be his mate. In order to claim her Veda must run in the annual Lycaon Moon mating ritual He loves her and he’s convinced she still loves him. All he has to do is break through the emotional shell she’s built around her heart.
Veda has created a new life. She’s independence and doing just fine. She wants nothing to do with the Lycaon Moon ritual. As for Kane, the last thing she wants or needs is an alpha wolf.
HH: Both your leading characters are rebels and sparks fly when they meet. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling story? BJ: The story began with Veda. Once I fleshed out this independent she-wolf, everything else fell into place. Creating her back story, her past with Kane brought the story alive and gave it amazing intensity.
HH: What do you like best about Kane? BJ: He's a real guy. He doesn't try to win Veda back by making her sorry for him. He doesn't tell her the horrible truth. He revives their passion and rekindles their love.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story? What challenges did you face? BJ: Lycaon Moon was my first werewolf story and I really loved the sparks that flew between Veda and Kane. The challenge with any paranormal story is making the story believable. The characters must come alive in both human and wolven form.
HH: What can readers look forward to from you this year? BJ: Snow Angel, in the Changeling Press Snowbound series was released in February. In March, my fantasy warrior story, Earthly Pleasure will be on of six stories in Ellora's Cavemen, Jewels of the Nile Volume 1. In April, another werewolf story called Lunar Eclipse will be published by Changeling Press. In May, Knight's Emerald, a story about a medieval spell and a centuries old emerald, will be part of Ellora's Cave Birthstone Books.
Later in 2008, Hunting Evil, a futuristic vampire story, and Spaceport:Scavenger will be published by Changeling Press. 2008 promises to be a reallly exciting year.
HH: You've been a prolific writer with an impressive list of books. What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career? BJ: My goal is to enjoy what I do and be happy in the process.
HH: What do you still enjoy about being a writer? BJ: The excitement of writing the first scene. You set the tone for the whole book. I will admit to falling in love with my heros and rooting for my heroines.
I have to admit I love getting good reviewers. I really got a thrill when I won a 2007 Reviewer's Choice Award from Sensual-Ecataromance for Something Blue.
HH: What do you do when you get stuck in a story? BJ: Take a walk. Work on another book. I don't like to force the action.
HH: How do you celebrate a great review or a new contract? BJ: I call my sister who lives in Arizona. She's my best fan. A glass of champagne or red wine at 5PM.
HH: Will you be taking any vacations this year? BJ: I'm planning a trip to Arizona. I go several times a year. I have six sisters, we live in five different states. We are planning a reunion, somewhere on the East Coast in the fall. It's tough getting the whole seven together in the same place at the same time.
HH: Thank you!
