An Interview with Lyric James
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Lyric, welcome to TRS BLUE! Please tell us about your featured work, A Gift of Chocolate.

LJ: Hi Holly! Thanks for having me. A Gift of Chocolate is about a struggling single mom, Sabrina, whose daughter sneaks off from her after school art program to buy her mom a Valentine's Day present. When she does, she buys her mom several pieces of chocolate that have been spiced with a magic potion. When her daughter sneaks off, a police officer decides that he's going to escort her safely back to her mother. She's drawn to the sexy heroic cop, but doesn't believe he'd be interested in someone like her.

HH: The gift of a child and one act of kindness equals one stunning romance for your heroine. Where did you get the idea for this wonderful story?

LJ: Actually, the idea for this story is the result of a brainstorm between me and my critique partners we did about two years ago. It was originally my idea, but once they got to helping me brainstorm it, it turned totally into something else...a series called "Simply Decadent." My book, A Gift of Chocolate, is the first in the series. My critique partner, Anna Leigh Keaton, wrote the second book - which by the way releases the same day as mine. The third and fourth books will be released next February from Tanner Holmes and Brandi Broughton. Not to give too many details away about the series, but the magic potion put in the chocolate is what ties all the books together - to be wrapped up in book 4 by Brandi.

HH: What do you like best about Allen Hughes?

LJ: He's sexy, sensitive and a hero! And I love cops…my husband has been a police officer for almost 10 years.

HH: You must be proud. What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

LJ: Developing the series with my critique partners. We spent a lot of time coming up with the concept and tying it all together. You will be introduced to all the heroines of each book in my story. Krista - the seller of the chocolate will be the heroine of book 4. Abby - the art teacher is the heroine of book 3. Sharon, my heroine's best friend is the heroine in book 2, Sweetest Desire by Anna and of course Sabrina in book 1.

HH: What are you working on now?

LJ: At the moment, two stories for Cobblestone Press. One for the new Wicked line to be debuted in June and a sequel to Vindication, I've tentatively titled Under Cover. I hope to have both of these finished by the end of January. After that, I'll be working on a sequel to another story that I've tentatively titled Wickedly Tempted.

HH: What else do you have in store for readers in 2008?

LJ: February is going to be a busy for me. I have two titles releasing this month. A Gift of Chocolate from Cobblestone Press on February 8 and then, Thoroughly Tempted on February 19 from Samhain Publishing. In May, Temptation City will release from Samhain and in October, Rebirth will release from Cobblestone Press.

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

LJ: I'm not one of those writers who knew she wanted to be a writer since they were 8 years old. I was a fierce reader though. I devoured the Sweet Valley High series and anything written by Judy Blume when I was in junior high. My mother was and still is a voracious reader. She used to drive me nuts with it, especially when I wanted to get her attention. She would be so into a book I'd literally have to get in her face to talk to her. We used to joke about it all the time. Then, one day she was reading something and I was like "What is so good about this book? Tell me about it." I think I was about 13 or 14. She did and after that I was hooked on romance and couldn't get enough. But, it wasn't until I was in my mid-20's that the writing bug hit me. I got really serious about 5 years ago when I found eHarlequin and then met my critique partners online. I've been writing ever since.

HH: How have things changed for you since then?

LJ: Let's just say, the way I felt about my mom and books…my husband feels the same way about me and the computer. LOL He literally has to come and tap me on the shoulder sometimes to get my attention. But he supports me and that's all that matters.

HH: How do you balance a family, a day job, and your writing career?

LJ: LOL…see above. No, seriously, I write early in the morning or late at night when everyone else has gone to bed. I have a 20 month old, so spending any amount of time on the computer at home when he's around is virtually impossible. As I write this, I just gave him a bath and put him to bed. I do work also. I'm a middle school librarian. I spend my days surrounded by books, encouraging kids to read books and I love it. There's nothing like recommending a good book to a child to read.

HH: What would you most like for readers to know about you?

LJ: That besides my family, there's nothing I love more then sitting down at my computer to write a good book. All romance, whether it's straight romance or erotic romance ends in a happily ever after. Coming up with a unique story or twist on romance is so much fun for me. This last year, two books I wrote both made the best sellers list and that means I am doing something right and I really really appreciate my readers because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have a reason to do it. So, thanks! =)

Thanks Holly!

HH: Thank you!
