An Interview with Red Garnier

HH: Red, welcome to TRS BLUE! Please tell us about your latest work, Amatista.
RG: Thank you so much for having me. Well, Amatista is a fantastic novella out February 6 th from Ellora's Cave as part of their monthly jewel theme. Our heroine, Liana, holds something very important, something both humans and the savage Fohers have been looking for their whole lives. The quest to the river they seek, known as Amatista, is a dangerous one, but to Liana, it will also reveal many truths about herself along the way. Including her growing feelings for Kavi, the Foher who's captured her.
HH: Your story offers a battle over a priceless treasure and a heroine who is more than what she seems. Where did you get the idea for this incredible story? RG: Honestly it was a lightning strike. ;) I heard about the jewel theme and wanted to write a story for one of the jewels. I love Amethysts, the energy and power they are reported to have, and suddenly I wondered what it would be like to find a river full of these amethysts. Imagine how beautiful, magical . . . and getting excited about that idea, the full story began to develop.
HH: How did you go about creating the world for this work? RG: A lot was based on history, old cultures like the Aztecs, Indians, the coming of civilized men, tearing the forests to build cities, draining nature of its resources. So in Amatista we have the Fohers, a primitive culture, living in a virgin, unconquered planet that is suddenly being claimed and abused by the humans.
HH: What do you like best about your lead characters? RG: I love Kavi, the hero, who is so strong but so gentle. He's like a tender Hulk, carrying the heroine around, only thinking of saving her. He's adorable. I love the way Liana's personal self-discovery is linked to her emerging feelings for Kavi. The romance between them still makes me sigh.
HH: What are you working on now? RG: I have a mind to start on a romantic suspense and yet the idea is barely brewing so it might take me a little while. It is about an imprisoned werewolf who asks the heroine for sexual favors in exchange for information. It has the making of a very intense, dramatic story. Plus who doesn't love a werewolf?
HH: What else do you have in store for readers in 2008? RG: Upcoming with Ellora's Cave in April I have an Eoxtika Quickie titled Seven Sinners, about seven Others misbehaving in a night of sin and sex. In June I also have my first release with Samhain Publishing. Color My Heart is part of their Red-Hot Summer Anthology and is sure to heat up the computer screens.
HH: What do you enjoy most about being a writer? RG: I love writing, I love expressing myself, the incredible sensation of being inside my character's heads. They never fail to surprise me. I love to create things, to suspend reality and be swept away into a world where you will undoubtedly find a Happily Ever After.
HH: Where do your inspirations come from? RG: A lot of things, actually. I guess you never know what will trigger a great idea. Sometimes it's music, a famous quote, a movie line. Sometimes while dozing off to sleep, inspiration strikes. It comes at any moment. The worst part is when you are waiting for it to come and it takes its sweet time. =)
HH: If you weren't writing, what would you be doing? RG: If I weren't a writer, I would love to teach, to plant a seed in a child's mind that will grow to out best even your greatest thoughts. I love the hope there is for our future in children.
HH: What would you most like for readers to know about you? RG: I'd love to thank each and everyone for their support, encouragement, for spending their precious time with me and my books. It is incredibly touching and very inspiring. =)
HH: Thank you!
