By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio HH: BJ, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Holiday Moon. Where did the idea for this sizzling holiday story? BJ: I had been thinking about writing a story about moon soldiers, werewolves serving in the military. Then I saw a news reports about troops coming home after a year overseas. These soldiers had missed spending the holidays with their families. An idea began to gel -- two soldiers, one werewolf and one human, a covert operation on Christmas Eve that forces them both to come to terms with their secret feelings. Beguiled is the second Spaceport book I have written. My first book was Scavenger, the story of a space junk collector. HH: What do you like about Sezri and what's her greatest strength? BJ: Sezri is a sergeant and it’s her job to lead the werewolves during field operations. Her strength is her commitment to duty, country and those who serve under her. Wounded and unable to keep up with her team, Sezri orders the werewolves to leave her behind and proceed to the pre-assigned pickup point. She puts her werewolves above her own safety. Her commitment to the job is what has kept her from acting on her growing feelings for her human commander. But that is all about to change. HH: What do you like best about Calix and what makes him different than most heroes? BJ: Calix is the token human in charge of Sezri’s team. Although the werewolves dislike having a human commander, Calix works hard to earn the respect of the moon soldiers. When the werewolves return from the mission without Sezri, Calix thinks with his heart and defies orders. Although Sezri has no idea how he feels, Calix is willing to put his career on the line. He can’t leave her behind, wounded and alone on Christmas Eve. Risking it all, he enters enemy territory to find the she-wolf he loves. HH: How did you go about creating the world where their story takes place? BJ: If werewolves existed their unique abilities would make them extraordinary soldiers. I created a special operations unit comprised of werewolves, the moon soldiers and a mission in an enemy country. Their shape-shifting gift would give the wolves an advantage during covert operations. Appearing like a wild wolf pack, my moon soldiers are able to penetrate enemy lines and complete complex operations. Creating the moon soldiers was a fun challenge. HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story? BJ: I loved writing a Christmas love story about soldiers. It has to be tough to be away from home and those you love during the holiday and I wanted to bring that emotion to life in Sezri and Calix’s story. HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? BJ: A new Christmas story, Wolf Run, was just released. The book is part of the multi-author Christmas series Santa’s Helpers published by Changeling Press. In February, expect Dragonfire: Covenant, the fourth book in the series from Changeling. HH: What activities motivate you in your writing career? BJ: I see a news report or have a conversation and ideas begin to pop in my brain. I get an idea for a story and I just have to run with it. But signing a contract with a deadline is the ultimate motivator. HH: Any goals you'd like to reach next year? BJ: I want to write more stories about the wolf packs I introduced in my October release, Pleasure Pact. HH: What are you reading at the moment? BJ: Guardian of Lies by Steve Martini and Doing Thyme by Kate Hill. HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2013? BJ: New books, new ideas, beautiful sunsets and amazing moonrises. I’m looking forward to having a great year. HH: Thank you!
