An Interview with B.J. McCall
HH: B.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Kela’s Guardian. Where did the idea for this amazing story originate?
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
BJ: I’ve always liked stories about an ordinary person confronting an extraordinary situation. My ‘What If ‘ plot bunny perked up its ears at the idea of an ordinary woman living in suburbia being thrust into a situation beyond her wildest dreams. She must deal with a problem beyond her skill set. She must stop a vampire.
HH: What do you like best about Kela and why will readers identify with her?
BJ: Kela’s fiancé has become a vampire. No one else knows or understands what is happening and the cops think she’s crazy. If you’ve had the experience of feeling afraid and alone, you’ll identify with Kela.
She’s thrown into a paranormal world and doubts her sanity, but instead of running away from the situation, she takes on the danger.
I hope the reader will enjoy Kela’s journey from common citizen to vampire hunter to partnering with her hunky, sword-wielding guardian as much as I enjoyed writing her story.
HH: What do you like best about Ansara and why will readers love him?
BJ:Ansara is the quintessential hero. He’s handsome, brave and fights against evil. He enters the story as a hero, saving Kela from a pack of vampires. She’s in the thick of battle using pointed stakes for weapons and exhibiting rudimentary skills at best. It’s obvious she’s in way over her head, but she stands her ground, earning Ansara’s respect and admiration.
Coming to Earth to destroy a demon is just another day on the job for a guardian, but some missions come with perks and Kela, the would-be warrior, is Ansara’s kind of woman.
HH: How did you go about creating the world they live in?
BJ: Kela’s Guardian is set in current day. Kela is a normal young woman who wanted home and family, but has to adjust to a new reality. Ansara is a celestial traveler and his background is very different from Kela’s. He’s a guardian from Thasia, working for the warrior angels. He’s lived for many centuries and his job is fighting the forces of evil throughout the universe.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: Demon Treat is my contribution to Changeling Press’ multi-author Halloween series, Trick or Treat. November brings another hot tale, Demon Seduction.
December means Christmas. Merry Mate is a werewolf story, one of many wonderful holiday books from the Red Velvet Christmas series published by Changeling Press.
HH: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
BJ: I’ve been an avid reader since childhood and for years I’d dreamed about being a writer, but never acted on that desire. Years ago I lost my job and during my short period of unemployment I took the first step and began writing. Since that day I haven’t stopped.
HH: Do you have appearances, in person or online, planned for the fall?
BJ: I’m blogging at Tina Donahue’s website October 10th. In the near future, I’ll be interviewing at the Changeling blog and at Cynthia Sax’s website. Of course, I’ll be participating in new release parties with TRS.
HH: What inspires you in your writing?
BJ: This year I’m into writing demon stories. The battle between good and evil is fascinating and this war is played out everyday on the news. I’m inspired by the idea of an ancient struggle between these forces over the human soul. My books, Kela’s Guardian, Demon Treat and Demon Seduction are inspired by that conflict.
HH: What are you reading at the moment?
BJ: Sleepwalker by Karen Robards and Lust by Moonbeam by Cynthia Sax
HH: Do you celebrate Halloween, and if so, how?
BJ: My neighborhood is big into trick or treating. Even the adults escorting the children are in costume. Like many of my neighbors I decorate my house and sit out front to pass out candy. It’s really fun and I look forward to the holiday.
HH: Thank you!top
