An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: B.J., thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Moonlust and is part of your series by the same name. First, what can you tell us about this amazing series?
BJ: The Moonlust series is a collection of wolf-shifter stories. Each book is about a shifter(s) living in the contemporary world of humans while dealing with the rules of the pack.
HH: Where does this story fit in the order of things?
BJ: The books in the series are stand alone titles. Some of the stories such as Claiming Moon, Mating Moon and Moonlust have heroes who work for the Federal Paranormal Crime Unit.
HH: What can you tell us about the other stories?
BJ: All of the stories are about the hero or heroine shifter finding his or her true mate. In Lycaon Moon, Mark of the Moon, Claiming Moon and Mating Moon both hero and heroine are shifters. In Moonlust and my upcoming title, Moonstruck, only one of the main characters is a shifter. In Lunar Eclipse, my hero is half-shifter and half-human. My stories are romance driven and all my H/H resolve the conflict and find true love.
HH: How did you bring their world so convincingly to life?
BJ: My shifters must live and work within the structure of the human world, but still abide by the rule of the pack. The law of the pack and the influence of the pack elders upon the shifters’ lives create conflict. Each story deals with the issues I believe shifters would confront if they lived in our world. Shifters have powers we humans do not have, but they also would have many of the same imperfections. Crimes would be committed against shifters and shifter criminals would exist. If shifters existed and lived among us, a special law enforcement agency would handle paranormal crimes. I created the Paranormal Crime Unit as a vehicle for my shifter law enforcement characters.
HH: What do you like best about Megan and Ry and why will readers love them?
BJ:
Megan is ordinary woman facing an extraordinary situation. She’s made all the wrong choices and is running for her life when she meets Ry. He’s a werewolf, but he’s the hero she needs.
It’s love at first sight, true moonlust, for Ry, but he’s a man of honor and patience. He wants Megan in his life. He’s all alpha male and wants to slay her dragons, but also must respect her needs and her goals.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: Moonstruck is a werewolf tale about a female Paranormal Crime Unit agent who catches a case that strikes right at the heart. The suspect is her sister and the victim is human. The moon is full and he’s drop-dead-gorgeous. Moonstuck is a May release from Changeling Press.
In July, look for Dragonfire:Covert, the third book in my dragonshifter series.
HH: How much of your life is spent on your writing career?
BJ: I try to write daily. I love the process of creating characters and plot lines. While enjoying my daily walks, I think up new story ideas or work through the next scene on my current WIP.
HH: What does it mean to you to be a writer?
BJ: It’s a great outlet for all the stories and characters that are always churning in my brain. They have to get out. I get a kick out of figuring out the plot or the next line of dialogue in a TV show or movie.
Writing my characters’ stories gives me great joy and a feeling of accomplishment. I love writing.
HH: What would we find in your to be read pile right now?
BJ: Betrayal in Death by J.D. Robb and Million Dollar Bra by Jennifer Loy.
HH: What plans do you have for the summer?
BJ: I just returned from a month’s stay in Arizona, helping out a family member. I think I’ll stay home this summer.
HH: Thank you!
