Reviews for Covenant
“This is one for those who like knowing that sometimes, dreams do come true, and once in a while, you can have what you want. But beware, this one could burn your fingers, so handle with care.”

An Interview with BJ McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: BJ, thank you for talking with us at TRS! Your featured book is Covenant and is part of your Dragon Fire series. What can you tell us about the series and where you got the idea for it?
BJ: I love shapeshifters. My dragon shifters have clans and live within a structured society. Each clan has lands and is ruled by a council. Clan law and traditions are featured in the second book, Chosen and in Covenant.
The shifters live alongside humans and must abide by human civil law as well. Dragons and humans interact, but at times they clash as in the first book, Captured and the third, Covert.
My idea for Covenant was a twist on an old story, the arranged marriage. Clan affiliation is important and bringing clans together by the bonding of mates is an honored tradition. My story is about Byrne and Livia and how these rules and traditions affect their lives.
HH: What can you tell us about the first three books and how they kicked off the series?
BJ: The common thread that ties the books together is the dragon warriors, an army of highly trained men and women who protect the clans and dragonfire, the special bond of passion shared by true mates.
In book one, Captured, my heroine, Zira is caught by a human tyrant and kept as an exotic pet. Zira is the daughter of the commander of the dragon warriors, but she doesn’t wait to be saved by her father’s army. Zira plots her own escape with a little help from her handsome human keeper.
In book two, Chosen, Rett is driven to leave the dragon warriors by a force he doesn’t fully understand until he is hired to protect Karis. Rett knows she’s the dragon for him, but his quest is just beginning as he discovers whether his true purpose is that of mate or protector.
Book three, Covert, is about Velka, a female dragon warrior who undertakes a dangerous undercover mission to infiltrate a violent, thieving band of rogue dragons. Velka is caught by a group of dragon-hating vigilantes. Being Aric’s prisoner doesn’t stop this determined warrior, but her attraction to the sexy vigilante is an unexpected hitch.
Each is a stand-alone book and can be read and enjoyed in any order.
HH: How does Covenant continue it?
BJ: The fourth book is another insight into the lives of dragonshifters. Thanks to a mysterious covenant Byrne Tregaron and Livia Hazac are to be bonded for life. Neither of the young dragons have a say in the matter, but breaking a covenant has serious consequences. By dragon law, divorce isn’t permitted and desertion will get one banished for life. A dragon is defined by his or her clan affiliation and family name.
Byrne has just finished his dragon warrior training and is embarking upon the career he’s dreamed about since he learned to blow fire. Life is good until he’s ordered to fulfill the covenant and take a mate he doesn’t know and does not want. The fact that she’s a member of a disgraced clan makes matters worse.
For years, Livia has dreamed about Byrne, but she doesn’t stand a chance marrying the handsome dragon from a wealthy family and an honorable clan.
HH: What do you like best about Livia and why will readers be cheering for her?
BJ: Livia has loved Byrne from afar for years. She doesn’t want to be forced upon him, but her family and her clan have made it impossible to defy the council’s order. She learns that Byrne is throwing a blowout party to celebrate his last night of freedom. Resenting being a pawn in a game she doesn’t understand, Livia is determined to have the dragon she wants. With seduction in mind and nothing to lose, she’s attends Byrne’s party. Livia has one night to get what she wants, her way.
HH: What do you like best about Byrne and why will readers love him?
BJ: Honor and family are important to Byrne. He has just finished his training as a dragon warrior, a respected achievement among dragons when the covenant is thrust upon him. He’s to be bonded with a Hazac within a few days. Being forced to take a bride from a disgraced clan is an unjust reward.
On the eve of his bonding ceremony he sees a beautiful woman and the attraction is instant. Come morning, Byrne must face reality. Breaking the covenant will bring dishonor to his family and put his career as a dragon warrior in jeopardy. His feelings for Via are strong, but is it dragonfire?
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: This month brings Night Sins, a vampire tale published by Changeling Press. Night Sins is another story about the Cemetery vampires introduced in Eternity Factor.
There is more to come this year. Kela’s Guardian, a demon slayer tale, will be published by Ellora’s Cave and Demon Treat will be released by Changeling Press in the fall.
HH: What do you enjoy most about being an author?
BJ: I enjoy creating characters and building worlds to tell their stories. Paranormal characters are especially exciting and challenging to create. I really love spinning tales of passion. It’s fun to control the action and writing the final chapter always gives me a feeling of accomplishment.
HH: How has your writing career changed since you started out?
BJ: At the beginning I experienced rejection, but that hasn’t happened in a long time. A career begins with one published work. I now have more time to write and I am more at ease with the process. I never seem to run out of ideas for stories and have been published by Ellora’s Cave, Red Sage, Cobblestone and Changeling Press..
HH: What do you think has been the most positive change?
BJ: Ebooks and the erotic romance genre were new when I started and many organizations and publishers snubbed them. But all that has changed.
HH: Where can readers find you online?
BJ: My website is www.bjmccall.com and my yahoo group is RedHotRomance.
HH: Thank you!
