An Interview with B.J. McCall
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: BJ, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Chosen and it's the second in your Dragonfire series. First, what can you tell us about this sizzling series?
BJ: Dragonfire is a special heat that is shared by true mates. While in human form the dragonshifter’s blood burns and sizzles during sex and smoke seeps from their nostrils. Together they share pure dragon passion. Each story is about my dragonshifter finding their true mate and experiencing dragonfire.
HH: How does Captured kick off the series?
BJ: Captured introduces the dragons of the Fire Mountains. The dragonshifters live in the Valley of the Clans deep in the Fire Mountains and far away from human society. The dragons are ruled by a council comprised of members from each clan and the valley is protected by an elite army of dragon warriors. My heroine, Zira, is the daughter of the leader of the dragon warrior. She is a fully trained warrior.
HH: How does Chosen continue it?
BJ:My dragon warrior hero, Rett, is driven to leave the Fire Mountains by a force he doesn’t fully understand. He loves his job and his family, but feels compelled to begin a journey with no idea where he is going. He is drawn to Draaken Bay, a seaside city founded by dragons, but now shared with humans. Because of his dragon warrior training, Rett is hired to protect the adult daughter of a rich dragon. A victim of a dragon-napping as an infant, Kara has been heavily guarded all her life.
Rett doesn’t know that Kara bears the mark of the dragon designating her as the Chosen, but he knows she’s the ‘one’ for him. Rett’s quest is just beginning as he discovers whether his true purpose is that of mate or protector.
Holly: How did you go about creating the world their story takes place in?
BJ: My dragons are ancient clans that have survived the rise of humans. Over the centuries dragons have adapted and now co-exist with humans. I wanted an enclave just for dragons, separate from the human world and created the Valley of the Clans in the Fire Mountains. For the enclave to thrive, I needed an army and created the dragon warriors. Dragonshifters live all over the world and the dragon warriors operate like a private army that protects all dragons.
Holly: What can you tell us about the books to come in the series?
BJ: I’m planning a story with a dragon warrior heroine that goes undercover to stop a band of rogue dragons. I don’t have a title yet, but I’m working on it.
Holly: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
BJ: Moonlust happens only once for a werewolf. It’s that moment when he sees a female and knows she’s his true mate. Ry Graham isn’t surprised that he is struck by moonlust, but he didn’t expect she would be a human. Moonlust will be released by Changeling Press on March 22nd.
Holly: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?
BJ:I have a vampire story I’ve been writing in fits and starts for two years. This is the year I will finish the book!
Holly: What sources of inspiration do you draw from for ideas?
BJ: I get ideas from news stories, tv shows, articles, conversations and the internet. I’ll research something for a sci-fi story and I’ll get an idea for a werewolf book. It’s like a strange connect-the-dots game is playing in my head. I keep adding dots until I form a plot and create characters.
For instance – I was watching a news report about returning troops from Afghanistan. They had been deployed for over a year which meant they had been gone during the holidays. I wanted to write a werewolf Christmas story and what better than werewolf soldiers on a covert operation far away from home. Holiday Moon was a result of that connect-the-dot plotting.
Holly: What's your favorite book so far in 2012?
BJ: I just read Demon’s Captive by Selena Illyria and really enjoyed the book. Selena created the Hellhound Detective Agency and I liked the idea so much I wrote Relentess for the series.
Holly:What are you most looking forward to in 2012?
BJ: 2012 is the Year of the Dragon and I’m inspired to add to my Dragonfire series. When you have an army of hot dragon warriors to work with the plot ideas just keep coming.
